Well, I’m an 80s kid, and I can tell you that amongst us boys it was less, “Man, the pony cartoon sure is lame!” and more, “Oh, man, did you see those six guys combine into that giant robot? That was so awesome!”
I can vaguely remember some of my classmates and I being terrified of the Smooze because it reminded us too much of the Inhumanoids, though.
Most likely wouldn’t be open about it like t is today. (Or, they are today. shrugs)
I can’t speak for 80s kids since I was born in 1990, but I don’t recall any guys at any of my schools talking about MLP.
Oh, I don’t mean to suggest Budanisky, Hama and Zacherle haven’t done anything else. I just wonder if they ever feel a sense of pride at seeing how many people enjoy the universes they had a big hand in creating.
@Background Pony #E8AB
Sorry, but may I ask whether you have proof of this, or this is just your opinion as an 80s kid? Because I am, and I remember enjoying MLP too. Not as much as, say, the Transformers, Dino Riders or the Thundercats, but I never saw any problem with watching My Little Pony or Jem.
Seriously. I’m just saying that the average 80s/90s boy had no interest in pretty pink ponies.
No need to insult the guy.
Hey moron, Bonnie had nothing to do with the marketing of her creation. If you’re going to direct vitriol at anyone, take it up with Hasbro.
Welcome to the world of “I created something cool, but I don’t have the money to promote it.”
Hama’s done quite a bit of Joe work after the original comic.
To be fair, the original G1 MLP was up against the Transformers and G.I. Joe. That wasn’t a war the ponies were going to win, especially when both had great toys going for them (the TFs being both vehicles and robots! The Joes having cool costumes…oh wait, that was Cobra).
I still remember replaying my old tape of the My Little Pony movie over and over as a kid, though. Good times. Good times.
@Jarkes
You know, I wonder if Bob Budanisky, the guy who pretty much single-handedly created the Transformers by giving them their personalities and stuff, ever looks at current TF shows and goes, “I helped create that.” Or sees how many people attend BotCons.
Ditto for Larry Hama and G. I. Joe.
No, the original G1 cartoon had plenty of male fans even before the days of FiM. Other than that you’re right.
@WM-R
I was actually surprised to find out that she was still alive.
She’d be the Cronus to Lauren Faust’s Zeus. Only without the cannibalism.
To paraphrase Galactus, “If Fausticorn is a god, then what shall we call… Bonnie Zacherle?”

@Jarkes
It took awhile, but I’m glad she’s still around to see it happen.
Ooh. Well, sorry to break it to you, Bonnie, but up until FiM, MLP was considered a crappy girl’s cartoon by boys of the day.
Summer Hayes linked to it, so probably actually yes legit
Bonnie Zacherle actually has a great sense of humor on her con panels
Apparently she actually originally INTENDED the brand to appeal to both boys and girls.
