Sounds like a solid fanfic idea to me! Would also explain why we haven’t seen Zecora around lately ever since Gilda came back.

Because Zecora was Gilda all along. There never was any Zecora. After Gilda felt unwelcome and burned some bridges, 4 episodes later she disguised herself as a zebra and put her major in witch-doctoring to good use in Ponyville.
