The problem with the dresses was that Rarity was making them for a fashion show and in the fashion world it’s not just what you think, it’s what everyone thinks.
 
Not to mention that they ended up loving the dresses she actually made anyway, so there’s a lesson there about trusting people’s judgment.

I think it would have been nice if they kept some elements of Rarity’s original dresses and they kept some of their own ideas. For example, Twilight can keep that bow in her tail, or Rainbow Dash could keep her winged shoes. That way, Rarity’s later works won’t go to waste, and they can keep their personal style.

If the people/pony wearing them are happy, then that’s usually what matters.
 
At the same time though, if it’s a gift or something a friend did for you for free, you should be grateful. It’s kinda rude to say “oh, thanks for designing this beautiful dress for me, but I don’t like it. Can you make something entirely different instead?”
