Fair enough
All I’m saying is that yes, Fluttershy can be provoked in various ways, but that isn’t quite the same thing as having “hidden aggression”. I merely think that is an oversimplification.
Now that is an unnuanced position.
Fluttershy doesn’t have hidden aggression?
Remember, I never said that she was simnering with rage undernthe surface, as I did say that is probably presumptuous
That’s exactly the sort of non-nuanced assertion I’m discrediting. What Fluttershy did in Dragonshy was not aggressive, it was a measured response. What she did in PYHD was aggressive, but it was not “unleashed”, as if Fluttershy was tightly wound and always ready to snap. That was the result of a very specific set of circumstances, as was the incident in BNE. Each case is different in both obvious and subtle ways.
This would be like me seriously suggesting that because Rarity is sometimes susceptible to a little vanity, she is clearly a shallow, vapid, drama queen. This is obviously not true, and the people who say that sort of thing do so because they just plain don’t like her, and say that stuff to trash her. It’s an unfair interpretation.
They clearly show aggression being unleashed for a particular end
In Best Night Ever, Fluttershy certainly flipped out, but she wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.
As for Putting Your Hoof Down, she actually wasn’t “raging”, she had simply bought into Iron Will’s hyper-aggressive nonsense. Which is really stupid, but then, it was a really stupid episode. Like I pointed out before, Pinkie and Rarity were both well aware that it was abnormal for Fluttershy to act like that, and that IW’s influence played a major part in it. Point is, that was not some emotional tantrum, it was part of a failed lifestyle alteration.
Dragonshy is perhaps the easiest to debunk, in this lineup. Fluttershy never lost her cool and never flew into any kind of rage, she simply put the dragon that was threatening her friends in his place. She was in complete control when that happened, even showing understanding to the dragon’s objections while correcting him. Frankly, I think that scene is one of Fluttershy’s finest moments.
Each of these cases were extremely particular, with varied and specific inputs and responses. I think it’s a disservice to can them all up as mere acts of “rage”.
@PonyPon
Maybe so, but whenever this kind of generalization is applied, it damages detailed critiques. Taking a complex character and attempting to reduce her to a simplified archetype is a good way to ruin legitimate analysis.
And yet, it’s a ubiquitous one applied to many other characters as well.
Well people in these comments are.
And nobody said she wasnt vain, merely that a mountain is being made of a molehill.
Dragonshy, bne, pyhd. Probably more but those are the bigguns
Twilight wasn’t offended, no, but I tend to see that as merely overlooking one of the quirks/shortcomings of a friend. People don’t usually make a big fuss over such things.
But anyway, what three occasions are you thinking of?
Well, I think 3 times is enough. For varying reasons.
Anyway, my dog in this fight was people saying Rarity was not taking a compliment gracefully. Which, thinking of Green was kinda true if not for the fact that the authors were going for renewed confidence in that scene and as such neither Twilight nor Rarity took it as rudeness.
In the dragon quest scene, she was indeed being show-offy and Twilight did compliment her. So I guess one could say she did not take the compliment gracefully. But again, I don’t think her being rude is what the writers were trying to communicate, because again it doesn’t look like Twilight was offended by her peacocking.
I like how I’ve answered that question you just asked for you three times now and yet you continue to ignore what I’m telling you
It’s almost as if you don’t want to accept what’s being shoved right into your face because you can’t stand the thought of your precious Fluttershy not being perfect or something
Meh, I disagree. What examples do we have of Fluttershy “exploding” in anger? Only one or two occasions even come close to that description.
Only in BNE? Aren’t we forgetting about PYHD and Dragonshy? We’ve been talking about PYHD a good chunk of this entire discussion. Come on. Stop ignoring what’s happened in the show itself.
My mistake, I thought it was from Green Isnt Your Color. After rechecking it is indeed not, although Rarity says something similar.
In which case she was being show-offy (although I never said she was not show-offy and vain, merely that she was not being rude to Twilight in the scene I was thinking of).
As for your Fluttershy thing, she explodes in anger far more than Dash or Rarity have. So her aggression may be lesser on aggregate it is more punctuated, so PYHD is not so far out of character.
One ought to remember that Fluttershy’s so-called rage has never actually been terribly ferocious. In fact, the only episode to date that really demonstrates this mythical “rage” is BNE. And how exactly might one describe the Gala incident? She got a little crazy trying to befriend a few animals, and tried to capture some of them. That’s it. She abhors the idea of hurting anyone. Her battle cry was “You’re going to love me!”, not “I’ll rip you to pieces!”
I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to when you mention Rarity having “renewed confidence.” The quote in the image here comes from Dragon Quest. She was showing off her fabulous camo.
I don’t know about you, but to me the relation this conversation has to the image it falls under has no bearing on its inanity and abrasiveness. And this is coming from a person prone to abrasive conversations. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve mostly stopped paying attention because the remaining participants are just repeating themselves with somewhat different wording.
>Fluttershy doesn’t have pent up rage
Is this semantics? She clearly has more rage than other ponies, or more potent rage. Maybe it’s unsubstantiated to say it is pent up but that seems to be the cliche with characters like her so it’s not unreasonable to see why people would arrive at this.
>Implying this is about Rarity simply being vain
Read the image, what is the biggest word?
People insinuated she was simply being rude when that is clearly not how the show’s logic took her behavior. So again, at worst you can say the way the writers portrayed this was poor but it’s still clearly the point of the scene.
She’s supposed to be emanating renewed confidence, so the writers wanted to make this obvious and were a little sloppy in how they went about it…by trying to convey this obviously.
That is what this has been about for me.
Hence why I said people were ascribing rudeness onto the scene, one no character shared and the writers (by not having the characters share this perspective) clearly didn’t either.
We’ve got an entire episode to where she acted aggressively towards everyone because Iron Will tapped into her inner anger, for fuck’s sake.
You could also scroll down on the page where I had posted images from a couple other instances of where her anger got the best of her, but because I feel like you’re just going to ignore them for your own self-validiation, I’ll repost them.
You accuse me of saying that Rarity is flawless, and when I say I don’t think she’s flawless you tell me that I’m in denial of what I actually think. You proceed to discredit any notion that Fluttershy has anger pent up inside of her, just waiting to be unleashed, even though what I’m showing you isn’t my own personal speculation, but actual instances in the show where Fluttershy unleashed her anger - and of course, we’ve been talking about PYHD for a good while now.
So yeahh. When I’m being fronted with this kind of behavior over a long period of time, I kind of give up on trying to reason with the person. Forgive me for as much.
Yikes. Whatevs, I’m counting on you to have a much better reply than that.
As for Fluttershy, I think this whole conversation boils down to one fundamental thing: If you don’t think she is on some level a bit angry, I’d say that you’re kind of white-washing her personality. It doesn’t make her a terrible person, but it really is part of her characterization.
Attitude? I have no idea what you’re talking about.

“What?”
Did the pictures I posted not do it for you or something
I did poorly type the second part but you know what was being said: part of Fluttershy’s character is having pent up rage.
Don’t play coy. It’s weak.
And what I said about projecting onto the situation is not an argument in of itself, yes, but I am pointing out that in this scene people are trying to latch onto a negative character trait which none of the characters seem to realize exists.
Basically, people say PYHD is just sloppy writing but things like this where the writers were clearly aiming for a sense of restored confidence (this scene being after Rarity had moped around) rather than gracelessness are still latched onto by people in this fandom. When wouldn’t it at worst just be slightly sloppy writing? Considering that, again, none of the characters behaved as if Rarity was being rude.
^ This being an elaboration on what Ghostfacekiller was trying to say.
Please, drop the attitude. It doesn’t fit.
