For as muhc as I love shipping and SoarinDash, I like to focus on the individual character more or their platonic relationships with others. SoarinDash in one of my big MLP otp’s(Fluttermac and FlashLight being the other two) But, I like to pair Soarin with different ponies and see how they would work. My biggest Brotp is SoarinFlash because of the personality and background I gave the two. Plus, if they were to meet in the show, I feel they would be pretty good friends.

Rainbow Falls gave Soarin the “token nice guy” personality to work with since it seems the rest of the Wonderbolts are conceded jerks. (Granted we’ve only really been exposed to three) Spitfire is a huge bitch corrupted by her own power and Fleetfoot is her lisping yes man. That’s still 1 of 3. (There’s also the whole pie thing but honestly it’s been done to death and I’m personally tired of it.)
Also I wouldn’t use having little to no canon character development as an excuse for popularity or lack of popularity because 90% of the really popular non-main characters are popular because of things the fandom pulled out of nowhere. Derpy was never a mailman in the show, Vinyl was introduced as simply manning a turntable for a fashion show and somehow people interpreted that as her being an EDM artist, Time Turner is not The Doctor in fact his first speaking appearance he had an American accent, Braeburn is not gay in the show IDK where that came from I guess the gay cloppers wanted a mascot and went for the obnoxious cowboy.
Sorry for ranting, the point I’m trying to make is most of the fan favorite characters were blank slates with virtually no personalities or backstories and the fans just created their own and forced it until it became “canon”. Also all the characters I have also mentioned are knee-deep in shipping as well. Nopony is safe honestly.
Also for Soarin’s case, there is a lot of good non-shipping/non-porn art of him, you just gotta look hard for it. There’s actually a Soarin fan group on DA that collects Soarin art but bans shipping art for this reason.
It’s really upsetting that the male cast don’t treated as anything but shipping fodder by most of the fans and less than nothing by the staff.
And it super sad that Time Turner in the only really fleshed out male character(save for Spike and Discord…possibly Shining, Mac and Bulk…possibly)
And s5 did give us Party Favor, Double Diamond, and Trouble Shoes, so there is hope for the others…..
Problem is, on his own he’s pretty much a blank slate. We’ve only ever really seen him when he’s talking to Rainbow Dash, so there’s very little to him beyond ‘Wonderbolt with a penis who talks to Dash sometimes’. Like most of the male characters in this show he gets pretty much zero character development of any kind, which unfortunately relegates them to the shipping fodder bin.
The only male character who you can really work with is ironically enough Doctor Whooves, since Slice of Life gave him a ton of backstory and character in the five minutes he held the spotlight for.
Sadly, no.
That being said, I do agree that it’s annoying how Soarin is mostly used as a shipping accessory. I really wish he was more appreciated as a character on his own. It gets even worse with the LGBT bronies wanting to make every stallion gay for no reason.
It’s sad when this is the basic mind about 85% of the famdon has in relation to male characters.

you do realize the reason Soarin is with Dash a lot is because almost all his few appearances are with Dash……hence why the ship is HUGE and hence why theres a HUGE amount of it……..dont blame the shippers for working with only what they got
That’s ALL shipping art really. Shipping is not creative. Doctor/Derpy is always Doctor Who crap, AppleDash is always “butch lesbian” stereotypes, OctaScratch is always the cliched Classical/EDM yin-yang, etc.

I say theres like 2/3, it really bugs me that soarin’ by himself is nothing more than just fandom’s shipping addition to Dash.
soarin is nothing but a love interest for shippers to push soarin with dash.
dash is girly and pregnant with multiply oc children.
i don’t care if shippers do this, its art and people can paint whatever they want.
but when over 1/3 of all soarin pics is soarindash, we have a problem.
the sad part is, all soarindash pics are the same, bland and boring and overdone.
I don’t like any shipping with dash, it sounds stupid but I feel somewhat jealous…
