For my experience the only way “this weekend” don’t mean the coming one is when said on a Monday when asking something like “what did you do this weekend”, for Tuesday on it no longer means the past one.

I’ll fall for the bait… weekend means the end of the week you can say the battle of the bands is this weekend whether its Monday-Friday and its still correct.
