They didnt fail at anything,that was the joke. This scene was not trying to secretly relay any message,it was referencing how the fandom can see them both as lovers and as just friends. this whole episode was a storm of references, and all the body language and emphasis was all part of the trolling that Larson wanted.

Well according to the teaser we had mid episode, they seem to appear again in a later episode as Lyra put a flower on bonbon’s mane.
i sure hope we can see more episodes in the future with this two involved.
Ha ha yeah they failed pretty badly at that one didn’t they? All that denial made me want to ghey these two together more than ever.

If they were aiming for friendzoning they did a really poor job as that. Generally then they don’t say they’re the best of friends as they look at eachother with bedroom eyes, but more a passing glance while doing other stuff.
