Um, the last Hasbro merchandise featuring her was the “Soaring Pegasus” blindbag-size set, released a little over a year ago and giving her name as a muffin icon. There’s been third-party merchandise since then that’s given her name as “Muffins”, no icon involved.

In the post episode 100 screening panel at MLPMSP 2015 Larson said that in his original script Derpy wasn’t named on the show, but her line where attributed under the name Derpy on the first draft. Then when he presented the script he was told to reattribute all the lines to the name “muffin” instead.
 
So she was called muffin on the script, but her name was never intended to be used on the show. I honestly don’t think that they will ever call her muffin on screen, they know that this is an explosive issue.

He’s the Director, though– I don’t think he’s actually responsible in any way for what appears in the end credits; and while I do think that there was a conscious decision by someone– Miller, Larson, Hasbro executive fiat, who knows– to leave her unnamed in the scripted dialogue, until someone pins them down and asks them we don’t even know what her name was in the printed script, much less whose decision it was to call her “Muffins” in the credits. EqG characters appearing in the episode, however, is something that Miller would have been directly involved in or in charge of, and given how much poopflinging and table-flipping happened after Flash Sentry Pegasus Guard #2 appeared in Season 4, is something he would have had a definite reason to shoot down. Larson said at a con panel last weekend that Flash was in fact in the original script but got cut, and it’s entirely likely that the removal was what Miller was specifically referring to in this tweet. I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to assume that when two subject are presented, where one is of no real concern and the other is An Actual Big Deal, that Miller would have addressed the important one and ignored the other.

That’s a pretty big leap to make when that comes before the other. Still a stupid thing to go to war to, but that line of reasoning is just bad.

I guess it never occurred to any of the children dampening their diapers over this utterly unimportant nonsense that Miller might have been referring to the “Equestria Girls characters appearing during the episode” part because the fact that Derpy was never called by name in the actual episode and was only called “Muffins” in the credits was a complete non-issue to him.

Are you kidding? Of course having Derpy named as “Muffins” in the credits ruins the whole episode! Who cares that’s she appeared and had a speaking role in which she got to goof things up and be silly, and that everyone on the staff calls her Derpy, now she’s just another boring background pony! This is obviously worse than any other executive meddling that could happen; we may as well be back in G3 again!

And then who is stupid enough to actually think they’re changing her name from Derpy to this name clearly used for legal reasons? Why is this a thing anyone is thinking about when it couldn’t be clearer what the reasoning and intent is?! Do people just WANT drama?

Be grateful that they even let her talk again, AND have Tabitha St.Germain voice her as she was the original VA.

well technically bon bon is sweetie drops, they had to do a whole thing of it being her secret identity because of copyright, derpy is probably is wierd legal issues and hasbro doesnt want to face getting sued for possibly stealing a fans original creation or idea later on, they chose the next word she is most recognized by and its also very legal friendly, muffins.
 
Im very sure if it was an easy solution they would of just did it like Steven Magnet, probably no copyright, no legal issues, easy and done it was put in the show.
 
MA Larson had entire characters he’s written changed after the fact because of that, Meadow Brooke (in season 5 premiere, the one with 8 enchanted items) was originally Jade Flower or something, but they had to change it because of legal reasons.
