I am going to assume this likely means either Scott or Mitch moves into lead producer spot to work under her. Likely won’t change much on the show’s front.
I agree that the character writing is stronger during Lauren’s reign, and if you’re a character-focused person, then I can understand why you’d enjoy it more. I’m more of a setting-and-structure person, which is why I like the latter seasons and Rainbow Rocks a lot. Don’t get me wrong, season 1 was great, and it was great precisely because of the excellent character writing.
Let me put it this way: I’m willing to put up with weaker character writing if it’s in service of something. A definition first: When I say character writing, what I mean is how the characters communicate, not how they’re characterised or personalised. Anyway, to use an example that’ll come as no surprise to anyone who is aware of me and my, uhh, eccentricities: Mass Effect 1 and 2.
The character writing in ME1 was quite hockey at times, with the characters coming across as really preachy (paragon Shepard) or cartoonishly immoral/evil/stupid (The corporate scumbags on Noveria). In ME2 however, the character writing is much better, with the characters communicating in a mostly believable way, and even when a character gets either too preachy or too cartoonish, another character will step in and question them on it (Tali’s loyalty mission, for example). I prefer ME1 despite the weaker character writing, because said character writing is in service of establishing, enhancing, and building the setting and lore. It sucks at times, to be sure, but at least it’s in service of something. ME2’s character writing for the most part, is more there for its own sake, which if you’re a character-focused person, you’ll love (as many a ME2 fan will attest as they romance Thane or Miranda or Tali for the 10th time).
Bringing this back to FiM, I’m willing to put up with the weaker writing in the latter seasons and Rainbow Rocks because it’s in service of something, usually regarding the structure and setting. S1’s character writing did that as well to a degree, but it was strong enough to stand up on its own, without it feeling like “serviceable dialogue”. I’m not saying that the latter season’s character writing sucks, or that season 1’s character writing wasn’t in service of anything; but that I personally am willing to look past the weaker character writing in the latter seasons because the structure and setting stuff is really good IMHO.
+1 Internet!
I for one welcome our new blonde overlord.
What are you guys smoking? Sunset Shimmer and Equestria Girls aren’t nearly the best things about the franchise.
also she created the best character of the entire mlp franchise
Im really happy for her
@Ebalosus
“Developmenting a deep story and characters,” sounds like she’s going to even more involved in the show.
I wish I wasn’t… But, I probably could have gone my whole life. Without seeing that With My own Eyes
Meghan McCarthy has been the Story Editor (basically, the person in charge of the writing) since Season 3; if anything, moving up like this is and being responsible for more content is going to lessen her involvement in MLP:FiM.
@BK_Leonidas
Only if the new Story Editor is Aaron Horvath, Pamela Eells O’Connell, or Robert Orci.
That would make sense if I were a troll looking to start some drama. Fortunately, I’m not, and please don’t take what I said there at all seriously. I was just coming up with an example of the paranoid fan theories I’ve seen.
Now I’m imagining the sales pitch for green lighting this one note project.
“Okay here’s our idea for a new summer movie. Remember that TV show back in 2001 where the kids would launch spinning tops into a large bowl and watch as projections of dragons and other fantasy creatures would represent the two tops just mashing against each other until one stopped spinning? What if we stretched an episode like that into an hour and a half film?”
That would make more sense if Lauren hadn’t made the conscious choice to leave and to hand said creation to her former staff’s competent hands.
If it were you, would you preffer that the people you left in charge had failed and tainted your creation and ran it into the ground?
I’ve been hanging around this fandom too long.
I think she will go over the story of episodes of both MLP and Littlest Pet Shop. You’re probably right I doubt she’ll let the writers of MLP go astray from what she wants. I think it’s just a different way of saying “Head writer for multiple shows” she loves MLP she’s not going to let it go that easily.
I guess I’m puzzled as to exactly what a ‘head of storytelling’ does. I assume it must be like a tier above show runner, someone who handles content on a more general level for multiple product lines.
Meghan: Uhmm…
Hasbro: Or else you will DIE.
*My opinion. Disagree with it as much as I know people will.
I think you exaggerating it a bit, the show is not about shipping and should stay away from it, so I don’t really understand your “single mothers” complaining.
shipping is all good and fun, but in the actual show ? no way..
i don’t want to see the mane 6 turning into single mothers like desperate house wife
by season 10.
trust me that’s not going to stop the shippers
