It looks more like their society has become so cynical and nihilistic that they don’t trust anyone enough to make friends. It’s that sort of cynicism that seems to be a griffon trait, it’s just kinda overwhelmed them here.
Kinda like Our Town showed Pony traits (community and fixing everything with magic) taken to very unfortunate ends.

Well yes, but they used to have a functioning society. So they obviously must have a concept of friendship, at least at some point. And in order for that to be the case, they would have to have, on some level, a psychological need for it.
Like humans. And Ponies.
Coincidentally, Griffonstone didn’t resemble a functioning society. It was like Detroit with catbirds.

Except that’s not possible. If their psychological make-up is at all analogous to humanities (which concidering their whole warrior merchant thing, it is) then there is no way they could form anything resembling a functioning society without a capacity for kinship, and with it friendship. Even ISIS and the Nazis had friends and loved ones.
