not the drama, mind you
I hope, you’ll have enough kuddles tonight after this comment drama, princess.
… Well shit.
Drama in the comments.
The hell does reddit have to do with anything?
I don’t doubt that both those things are true. But, I still tend to think an image that collects 100 upvotes and 50 downvotes is honestly provoking a different emotional response in the average person who sees it than an image that collects 52 upvotes and 2 downvotes. Often, it’s not so much the score that matters as it is finding out if is something is prompting more than simple apathy.
There’s always going to be statistical noise in a system like this, but I have a hard time believing the overall trends are completely random and useless.
I’ve noticed with duplicate images that the same image posted twice at different times gets massively different voting behavior.
…I’ve also noticed that people who downvote based on content tend to passively downvote what comes in on the front page.
Votes are indeed not a very good way to judge how people actually feel about an image.
I can’t say I agree it would be exactly the same feedback (though if you’re going to say people can’t downvote based on content, I guess it sort of would be.)
Assuming a lot of people are, like I was a couple hours ago, ignorant of the idea that subjective downvoting is frowned upon, then if picture A gets 25 upvotes, but picture B gets 150, then, as an artist, I have no real way of knowing if the reason is that more people genuinely liked picture B or if it was simply that picture B got posted to the site at a time when traffic was significantly higher than picture A, so more people saw it on the front page.
Downvotes, while not perfect for the task, do help make it easier to tell how people are genuinely receiving something.
We get a lot of people doing bad stuff with downvotes. Giving people an easy way to, metaphorically, pee on something with no effort is bad.
The thing is, if we just had upvotes and no down, then it would provide much the same feedback. The only problem for the intended voting use is that it would mean old stuff would seem to be overly highly rated, but that’s not a huge issue.
Also, if we only had faves instead of upvotes, it would mean people would have to go so far as to publicly say they support something to affect its score while still being low effort. Less anonymity may make people a little less honest, but it also means they’re less likely to abuse things.
Really? Why’s that? Are you against the idea of voting itself, or is it just having to deal with occasional nonsense like this thread?
Personally, as an artist, I love having the ability to see what strikes a cord with people based on the votes. I post all my stuff to DA, but I come over here to see what people have found worth posting here and what’s gotten the most votes up or down. I just can’t get that kind of valuable feedback on DA, since the barrier of entry for someone leaving a comment is so much higher than the one-click voting system.
Upvoting’s different because it doesn’t just affect the score, it also allows for functionality that’s like faving except private, and faving auto-upvotes, and there was a time we didn’t have faving.
Upvotes and downvotes are thus not opposite but equal.
Btw, if we had to do things all over, I’d vote firmly against implementing image voting. IIRC TSP had a different idea for what he’d want if we could redo it.
So is upvoting based on content preference bueno?
I’m not asking to be contrarian, I’m genuinely curious if there is a different rule between the two. For example, if I really love the idea behind a piece but, artistically, it’s poorly executed, do I need to refrain from clicking the “favorite” button, since that also casts an upvote?
Commenting just to say you downvoted is worse.
Also, complex filter: (digestion AND vore) OR (vore AND death)
Yes, filtering out the low quality art is one of the functions of downvoting, but unless you can point to a specific site rule or FAQ that says that downvotes are exclusively for that purpose, then I’ll continue to believe people are well within their rights to factor subjective taste in their voting decision.
Personally, I love this type of stuff. In fact, with one exception (OoC pred), Kappe’s little checksheet of things he hates reads pretty much as a laundry list of my favourite types of vore, but I think he has every right to dislike it and downvote accordingly. Griping about it in the comments afterwards? Also his right… though not at all constructive and probably somewhat harmful to his own reputation.
As for the vote thresholds, the point of those is not to prevent anyone from seeing the “low quality” stuff. It’s so that when people are on an appropriate filter, they only see the stuff that average person on derpibooru is likely to appreciate. If the derpibooru community as a whole thinks that vore images are not worth their time, then more power to ’em. The rest of us can continue on in unfiltered bliss.
Just use the advanced filtering to block images that contain death and digestion. You’ll still see digestion of the strange non-fatal kind and you’ll still see death from non vore posts… Easy.
stay classy, we need more people like you
I’ve seen administrators say that the downvote is meant to help weed out the low-quality art from the site so that the best art can shine. People with vote thresholds don’t see things that have too many downvotes, and if you downvote based on subject preference rather than art quality WHEN THERE ARE FILTERS you can use to make it so you don’t have to see what you don’t like, then you are objectively using the downvote wrong. This isn’t reddit.
Not really, many images are tagged with digestion simply in conjunction with stomach noises. And yes, it was tagged with digestion - after you added it.
There is no such thing as misusing the downvote. It is a purely subjective, opinion-based scale. Using it at all is using it correctly.
no, but it was tagged with digestion, which for the purpose of vore images is practically the same thing
Mind you, the image wasn’t tagged with death until I added it. Would’ve seen it anyway. But I’ll do some experimentation with that. Thanks.
how about (!(vore, death), vore), or maybe (!(vore, !oc only), vore)?
First one hides all vore images that result in death, and the second hides all vore images that contain any non-oc characters.
You could also mix it up a bit, and filter all images that result in the death of canon characters, but dont filter out oc only images with death, for instance (!(vore, death || !oc only), vore). I think, i didnt test that last one, but im pretty sure it could work. Point is, you can either complain about the few images that slip through your lackluster filtering skills, or you can learn how to use filters properly.
I stopped. No more drama. Everyone can go home now.
It’s too late; the drama has already begun. Nice try to stop the drama, though, I give you credit there.
