this relationship failed because she pressed on the wonderbolt thing too much, and was too clingy, he didn’t want that, because it wasn’t his dream to become a wonderbolt, he became a guard instead, and that instantly knocked a hole in their relationship, so in his head, that was either a break up or “i’m just gonna move on”  
in short, he should have just told her he wanted to be a guard instead of being so secretive about the fact he never submitted an application  
She got really mad and it turned into that argument where you assume your relationship is over, but it really wasnt
 
so they both fucked up.

I don’t mind the flashbacks, since we do need some backstory (otherwise we have no idea what the heck is going on), but the “Chapter 1.5” flashback (showing how the whole mess started) fit more with the end of chapter 1 than this flashback (“Chapter 2.5”) fit with the end of chapter 2.

I’m the only one who thinks that this Flashback ruins the flow of the story? We’re in the middle of a war story about Minotaurs and Earth Ponies teaming up and destroying Canterlot with an airship armada while several main characters are surrender by Queen Chrysalis and her Changeling who may or may not be part of the Earth Pony/Minotaur alliance and then we suddenly get a several pages long flashback that explains the relationship between Spitfire and Pierson.

Remember, she’s back in the cave with her and Pierson’s daughter and the other refugees? She survived the initial attack and wasn’t affected by the machine…
