I know DHX can likely keep the EQG story fresh with just enough Equestrian elements to keep it more than just a high school sitcom, my fear is what Hasbro sees. Of course, if they are still thinking this as their response to Monster High, losing the Equestrian side would hurt them that way too - they need something more than the ordinary.

I don’t think you have to be too worried about that. If “Midnight Sparkle” is any indication, there will be plenty of magical hijinks in this next movie. And more generally, they’re not going to back away from EqG’s Equestrian influence when the whole point of the brand is to compete with other doll lines that play up their fantasy aspect. Rainbow Rocks laid the groundwork for a setting where Equestrian magic can drive the plot even if no FiM characters make an appearance. You have a thousand years’ worth of pony history that may have slipped through the mirror. You have native humans who can tap into pony magic more or less at will. And obviously you have Sunset Shimmer.

Yes, and they could still have a loose connection with Sunset/pony Twilight writing to each other.
 
However, what to me is keeping EQG series good is that we are talking things from Equestria leaking into the human world (the crown, the Sirens) that require solutions that are just beyond standard high school problems.
 
This is why I’m hoping there’s something more to what FG has set out, because right now, the plot seems completely unconnected to any Equestrian aspects and has all the feel of a standard school sitcom solution. (At least at this point in time last year for RR, we knew the Dazzlings were once from Equestria, so that had a thing going for it)

If there will be a Equestria Girls series, making pony Twilight unable to travel through the portal ocassionally will make the plot of the episodes easier to make.

My theory based on the minimal amount of details is that SciTwi - who appears to be nerd for all things given, but wants to learn more about CHS - joins up with the Shadowbolts so that she gets a free trip to CHS allowing her to study those strange readings up close. She’s curious and far from evil. Perhaps her teammates are, perhaps there’s something else, but she gets caught up into that as a result.
 
With Flash, now with the new toy, is that when SciTwi arrives at CHS for the competition, he thinks that is his Twi, there’s a whole crossed-wires thing (perhaps that the other Humane 5 get caught up into until they realize she’s not pony Twi) and he starts doting on her, and only until PonyTwi arrives does he get to eat crow for screwing that up bad.
 
What I am worried about is that knowing full well Hasbro will ride the EQG train as far as they can, that this sets up the need to eliminate any pony from EQG, establishing a Twi that can work with the others.

I agree. Lots of people are saying that Sci-Twi MUST be evil, but I’m hoping that she is not the main villain of the movie, and that she doesn’t become Flash’s girlfriend.

A thought to keep in mind is that they’ve never established, yet, that the Shadowbolts are bad. Rivals yes, but it could be rivals ala the Cloudsdale team vs the Ponyville team in that it only goes as far as the competition, and outside they’re all chill.
 
There could be a bigger-bad that drives the larger story that we’ve not see a sign of.
