You know, I’ll clap if the people at DHX decide to throw in another dragon who, by nature, is not a prideful douchebag just so it can put to rest all these “Dragon are always bastards” debates to rest.
 
It’s true, not all are redeemable…but that doesn’t mean everyone isn’t capable of it.

I know the eye/ear coloring is off , and the posted comic here is chronologically well after the Sombra comic, but dragons ARE long-lived. May be possibly the same implied dragon here.

Every single dragon he’s met has either tried to kill him for stupid reasons or been an insensitive, selfish jerk with complete disregard for life. That’s what he knows of his race. Nothing else, since there are no books on them. Please do remember that this isn’t like RL where race doesn’t matter sht for the kind of person you are. This is a magical world of magical creatures. And some of these creatures seem to have inherent traits and personalities to them.
 
Aside from being dangerous and powerful (which gave him a bit of pride), considering his past experiences and the complete and utter lack onf information about them in any books, all Spike probably thought about Dragons before going to the migration was that they are greedy and evil. Then he met some closer to his age, and they turned out to be selfish, uncaring bastards with no respect for life. While ponies, on the other hand, have been the ones to teach him about friendship, kindness, generosity, etc.
 
So ok, maybe they could’ve worded it better to avoid offending the most sensitive people, but on the other hand, they were being realistic with the setting they are working withy. These are not other races of ponies. This would be the equivalent of, for example, finding an extraterrestrial race where all of humanity’s interactions with them show them as purely hostile beings who thrive in violence, are sadistic by nature, and whose “mentality” always seems to center around taking what you want from anyone, and fck what they think or their necesities.
 
That’s what dragons are so far.
 
And in Spike’s mind, the ponies are bsically the reason he’s not another selfish monster like the rest of his race. Which really, considering what we’ve seen (FF#14 isn’t canon, as it contradicts the show) probably isn’t that far from the truth. Since every dragon has been like this, and they’ve already met quite a few, then yes, its entirely possible that such is the natural behaviour of all dragons. The one they gravitate to if left to grow on their own.
 
Spike is different because he was raised since birth by a race that mostly thinks/acts the complete opposite way (at least the ones closer to Spike). So its understandable that he sees ponies as a race capable of such virtues, while dragons are not. Again, fixating on the race issue is useless because this world has many different sapient creatures, while we do not. The mere term “race” fills a completely different purpose here that it does in RL.

For them, yes. Because unfortunately the episode’s writing made it sound like he’s ashamed to BE a dragon, not LIKE the other dragons. For them, he saying he preffers to be a pony is like “I preffer to be a different race because my race sucks” When in reality what they were looking for was “I preffer to be more like this group of people because the group of people society/biology WANTS me to be aren’t the best group”.  
In other words: It tried to say it’s ok to like “girly” things (like MLP) and not liking or being part of the “MANLY” demographic (like… most shit in MTV), but it made it look like “I feel more like a white dude because blacks are beasts”

They are not talking about races, they are talking about cultures. The pony culture is a culture that promotes being kind and friendly, dragon culture is one that promotes being violent and greedy. Lest say that spike is a human that was born in country A but it was adopted by a family in country B. A’s culture is promotes violence, has a caste system or its ok with slavery. B’s culture is an inclusive culture that respects people’s rights. Then spike learns about A’s culture and didn’t like it, adopts a dog and tells it the he’s going to teach him how to be B, is that racist?

In case anyone has doubts, here’s a quote from Spike, the very last line of Dragon Quest:
 
 
“Hey, welcome to the family, Peewee! Stick with me. I’ve got plenty to teach you about being a pony.”
 
Not a good phoenix or a good dragon or even just good, a pony is what Spike thinks he should be. That is the lesson the episode ends on.

Somebody doesn’t seem to know that Dragon Quest was a piece of shit with accidental racist connotations. While the comic was little better, it was still better.

That’s what happens when you have a lot of writers but not direction to work together to ensemble a unified canon: You end up with many different versions and visions of a world. That’s why Whitley’s dragons are Dragon Tales rejects while Andy has more fierce-natured dragons. And also why we have a Luna that acts like a spoiled brat, and one that tries her hardest to surpass the shadow of her past sins (no pun intended).  
Also, the number 1 reason the comics contradict the show constantly either because of lack of communication or simply saying “Screw this canon!” (I’m looking at you, FF#14)
