To be fair, she’s cried before. She did shed tears and hugged Twilight and Applejack when AJ agreed to come home at the end of Last Roundup. So, she’s definitely shown her softer side in the past.

Well she was the runt of the litter in cloudsdale and had to grow up super competitive/confrontational to avoid or cope with bullying.She’s created a persona of endless confidence and excellence that sometimes goes off the rails into cocky arrogance. One of her oldest friends ditched her after seeing her with her “lame friends” and she’s kept her emotions closely guarded, especially the more embarrassing ones, and is petrified of rejection or how others perceive her.
 
I’d say this outburst was a major step of rainbow dash opening up to her friends and development as a character, as well as a long time coming.

I still love how one of the fastest ponies around fell in love with a pet so slow and in practical. So cute <3

Yeah, I think that as much as I loved Rainbow Dash’s strong feelings for her pet and what she would do to keep him for winter, her actions were extreme. But, I don’t think that ruins the episode for me because everything else about it was so good.

I don’t mind her not thinking clearly. If the episode was just her being in denial, that would have been fine. But there’s plenty of stuff they could have done with her being in that state besides having her destroy the weather factory and being completely inconsolable. That was just going overboard, and made her look a bit insane.
 
That said, this specific moment was great.

She’s just hyper social, there are people IRL who can feel legitimately alone in rooms full of family and friends just because no one is talking to them at the moment,

Um, I was just saying it’s odd how she feels so alone when she has friends to be with. And I’ll have you know I defended Dash’s reaction in this episode earlier for that very reason I have a pet and I would be devestated if something happened to him.
