Rainbow Dash ignores Tank’s needs in order to stay healthy, turns her back on her friends, puts the environment and a factory full of workers in danger and we’re supposed to feel sorry for her? I don’t think so.

Think about the episode being more about separation from a friend than only a death metaphor.Being forced to be separated from dear friends (even temporally) can be heartbreaking for some people

I feel like they wanted us to compare this to death but it comes off as being whiny they should have just done it. Kids can handle the concept of death just fine and it would have made for a more meaningful episode.
