By manipulating events so that chaos, betrayal, and bloodshed would befell to CMC.
In the end, CMC would get Cutie Marks (Shadows always delivers what people wants, after all), but many of their family members and close acquaintances will be dead, and their friendship in tatter. They might have became stronger or wiser than before, but they would have so traumatized by events that they no longer wants that Cutie Marks and regrets ever answering to that question.
If they actually survives, of course. Shadows delivers gifts, but it’s the Younger Races’ job to survive the storm that follows.
