The express the notion of what you say, but their actions is where the comparison lies.
It’s the disconnect between ideal and action that is the overarching thing.
Starlight claimed a better life through equality, but the town was worse off because of the lack of specialization.
Some SJWs place emphasis on annihilating of such things like racism and sexism while being rather racist and sexist about it.

And you could make a laundry list of of these.

I don’t get the SJW comparisons.
Like, aren’t they typically characterized as the opposite extreme - everyone is a special snowflake and all personal differences are necessarily good (unless I happen to be uncomfortable with the particular one)?

In the same way it was used in the episode, it’s a self-handicapping/defeatist ideal.
The phrase’s meaning is basically: “You can’t fail if you never try”; the idea that possible failure is not worth the possible reward and as such the person doesn’t try.
The creepiness comes from the fact that this is a very common idea and feeling that many people feel; be it in moments of weakness or over long periods of depression and whatnot.
Also you have to consider the surprise factor of such a phrase popping up in MLP of all things.

What is so creepy about it, anyway. All it makes me think about insomnia.

Eh, it’s pretty easy if one’s willing to read its origin, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. My personal interpretation is “Trying to take an easy path to equal capabilities ends up only with bad muffins”.

Sadly SJWs have proven time and time again they’re actually illiterate.

P.S. “Hard path to equal capabilities” is making everyone as capable as the best of the best in every related field, “easy” one is making everyone as UNcapable as the worst of the worst. Either are pretty bad.
