First off, Chinese Dragons actually WERE considered to be chimera-like creatures, with the head of a camel, paws of tigers, neck of a snake, eyes of a hare, etc.
Secondly, while Chinese dragons are indeed considered to be benevolent, interpretations of myths are not set in stone nowadays, and they change over time. For example, the Western concept of dragons varied from giant snakes to the more familiar giant winged lizards. Originally they were mindless monsters/minions of Satan that kidnapped virgins, but thanks to writers like Tolkein Western dragons are often depicted as intelligent beings that are often smarter than humans, who can be good, evil, or neutral.
Ah, I see.
