the pieta plagiarism. sadly(?) when people talk about that and DC, they usually mean the crisis one (superman cradling supergirl).
did they ever made a statue of that? i remember in toyfare about an article of a possible statue for that but one of interviewees ain’t too keen on making batman human (he defended batman being punched by hal jordan as being surprised rather than actually hurt).
Not to restart a month old argument but there is a very famous Batman cover which shows Batman’s powerlessness. It’s the cover for A Death in the Family. I remember reading an old interview of Jim Aparo saying they modeled the image after the pieta images where Mary is holding Christ’s body after his death. The whole point is to show the suffering of both the living person and the body of the dead.
found a hilarious parody of the cover on DA
Yeah that’s a good point too
thinking about your red hood and joker cover, it’s most likely they’ll never draw jason crying like barbara in the cover. heck they can make covers featuring bane-batman, lex luthor/braniac/darkseid/doomsday-superman, mongul/cyborg superman-hal jordan in the same pose as in the batgirl cover and not one of them would probably be in a submissive pose.
Yes.
Yeah I saw the crowbar too but the urn says “Robin II” so I didn’t see need mentioning the bar
Your suggestion does sound 100 times more awesome
In Batman Eternal the family spread out hunting different villains and Barb’s going after the Joker’s Daughter who’s hiding out in the amusement park her dad was taken to she pauses outside and is ask if she wants someone else to take it but simply says “No I have to do this”
Your suggestion goes with that nicely
you didn’t see the crowbar next to the urn?
i came up with something, what if they changed the expression on batgirl’s face from fear to defiance? although it’s a rebooted continuity, one of the signs that barbara was over the paralysis was facing the joker (though i might be misremembering that confrontation) as oracle (though joker was incarcerated at that point). it might not apply in this case because she might not be over it, but at least people can’t say she’s a total victim in the cover.
First of all I don’t like that show to begin with(and yes I see the urn)
Second you seem to be missing the point
What I’m trying to say is if you put a male character in a similar situation and not get upset than it’s a double standard and I do not approve of hypocrisy
And I get what your saying that there’s more to Barb then “The Killing Joke” but that’s still apart of her history like “Death in the Family” is for Jason and we shouldn’t shy away from referencing it anymore then say Hal becoming Parerlax
What I’m trying to say is it’s just a cover that’s making a reference and is not worth getting bent out of shape about
You at least actually care about the character which is more then can be said for others who are complaining about it just because they can’t stand to see a woman in danger
God forbid as a legitimate super hero she deal with the same stuff the boys do
well if the joker wasn’t wearing something that references killing joke, it’ll probably be fine with me. it’s like saying that story was the only good thing (storywise) that happened to barbara gordon’s history (no killing joke = no oracle).
and a little test for your red hood argument
Lots of comic book covers have the hero in distress or in peril it’s the story inside that has hero triumphing that matters
One cover does not tarnish Babs’ image as a hero if it had been a story that had made her look bad then there’s a reason to be upset
Let’s do some gender reversal if it was Red Hood with the Joker holding a crowbar would you upset? I wouldn’t because like or not that’s part of the history of those characters and one little cover that pays homage to it is not ruining the character
That’s true. But seeing this from you and Alberts point of view makes me want to see an edit with the mane-iac and hum-drum now :D
depends. someone’s probably going to make an edit with the heroes for hire cover probably to make a point
Whew! Hopefully this doesn’t spiral out of control :)
i’ll try to be civil as much as possible.
@Background Pony #AD46
the miller thing was just for reference. that and he’s one of those who hate censorship of any kind so it makes sense to use miller about an artist probably making the most offensive art as possible.
i’m a comic fan and i think the cover is bad for barbara’s image. it’s kinda like hank pym and roy harper not ever being free of their ‘wife-beater’ and ‘drug addict’ past. again, it’s the ‘killing joke’ suit that really hammers it down.
Oh who gives a shit what Frank Miller does anymore these days
I don’t even read Batgirl but I’m pissed about idiots who most likely don’t even read comic getting bitchie about an homage
@OptimusPrimevil
Guys lets try to be calm about this and not let this get out of hand and yes playing peace keeper is a stupid idea :/
i dunno. to me the cover just undones whatever good barbara gordon did as a character and just reminds people of the killing joke as if it’s the ONLY important story in the character’s history (and even then, she’s only a plot device. the focus is about batman and gordon’s reaction to it).
i am deathly curious about your ‘censorship’ line. if for example frank miller depicts the most offensive anti-MLP art he could think of, would you still be true to your line?
most of the time those who say ‘no to censoring, free speech’ really means ‘no to censoring, free speech to the stuff I like’. was wondering if that’s the case for you.
based on the suit joker is wearing, it just brings up the old theories that barbara was raped during ‘the killing joke’. alan moore outright debunks that though. still creepy
Except for all the covers in the past where Batman is the one looking like the Joker’s about to kill him.
Gotta love Double Standards.
Batgirl is never a damsel in distress.
