You do understand that the reason HL fans want E3 so badly is because the story ended on a cliff-hanger, right? It’s not just “Oh, we like this series.” Half-Life 2 ended on a cliff-hanger. Episode 1 picked up, ended on a cliff-hanger. Episode 2 picked up from there, and ended on a cliff-hanger. You’ve had three cliff-hangers in a row now and the story hasn’t been finished. And Valve’s been teasing them ever since. THAT’S why they’re so insistent on getting E3. Imagine George Lucas just stopped at Empire Strikes Back and said Return of the Jedi was coming soon, but it never did.
Some even go far by saying they’ll murder Gabe Newell in the most whatever way as possible. Joke or not, they make the proclaimed “shitty fandoms” whether it’s comic, manga, anime, or etc. into a sane community. Hypocritical or not on myself, this needs to be said.
It’s been 50 years! How does people not get this.
I think what it is, is it’s a fairy tale set in modern mundane world and played completely straight. Idylic town, totally contrived plots, but you just want to get into it so badly that you do. I love those comics so much.
Man, (or woman I dunno lol), Imma get heavy with feels for a moment if you don’t mind. My dad used to read me those when I was just a little kid. I lost my folks when I was pretty young, and him sitting there, reading those comics and doing different voices for all the characters is one of the few clear memories I have of spending time with him.
Oh fuck you Lumino you made me start crying.
Man, I loved the Sandlot. And yeah, I know what you mean about the weird charm. It’s a normal everyday world with the tiniest touch of fantasy thrown in. So small you might miss it entirely, but it really does make everything just a bit more fantastic.

The Archie Comics just have this… weird charm to them. I’ve read them since I was a lad. I don’t really know how to explain it; it’s almost like someone took a mundane story about these teenagers and somehow turned it into a fantasy. Ever watch movies like The Sandlot or Stand By Me? Exact same weird charm. You sort of just lose yourself in them.
@Background Pony #62CD
Oh my God. OH MY GOD! That was one of the most silliest and most entertaining things I had ever read. Let it be known before man and God that this is the best comic panel ever in the history of mankind:
Kinda hard to know if the same anons are complaining in each case, but I’m seeing some named users complaining about both X and Y.
@The Smiling Pony
Well, I do own the “Archie Meets the Punisher” crossover issue (yes, that Punisher). And it’s actually pretty good.
@Jarkes
Zing!
Get out, you Hasdrone!
“the idea that people can form different opinions is completely alien to him”
I could say that about half the people who scream things like “SHILL!!!!!1111!!!” when someone likes a comic that they don’t.
He mentioned that he’s only talking about one person. Not sure if this makes his comment worse or just as bad, but certainly not better.
I like Spike, but those kinda fanatical/overprotective Spike-fans are annoying.
@Vree
I don’t think he’s saying all fans are like that, I think he’s just talking about the unpleasable ones. Still, it’s not a very “professional” remark really, and he didn’t word it very well. It comes off as more “sour grapes,” then a rebuttal. (Not that I’m justifying the comic-haters. Some do go overboard sometimes.)
No person who knows the first thing about writing for others’ enjoyment would use that kind of old “people don’t like my stuff because they are unpleasable” excuse.
Eisner nominated, pfft. yeah, right.
Another reason as to why fandom-hating is a load of horseshit.
That’s something I notice a lot. A lot of people seem to be under the impression that fandoms are a perfectly unified entity like a hive-mind. But that’s not the case. They act like the people who complain about something and people who complain about the opposite are exactly the same people. But that’s not the case (well, most of the time anyway). Like any other group, fandoms are composed of different people with different opinions. They just all happen to like a certain thing very much.
Hell, political parties, where everyone has similar views, have people with various different opinions in it. Why would a fandom be more unified that that?
When there are fans that have one opinion and fans that have the opposite one, then that’s not a fandom being unpleasable. That’s simply people being people. But I guess the illusion of a hive-minded fandom makes for a better enemy image.
You do realize that the Megaman comics aren’t depicted to be in the same universe as the mainline Archie comics, right.
Like the time Jughead stole Hitler’s hamburgers or Superman tried to kill Archie for dumping Veronica.
I’m only half making that up.
I should actually read some one day… there must be something to them if they’ve lasted this long, right?
Have you read Archie Comics Megaman? It’s not quite that deep, but it’s a series of comics that doesn’t pull it’s punches from time to time.
I wish there were this kind of writing in media for kids and teens.
Yeah. I mean, racial tensions are a really complex subject, specially when one has a very legitimate reason to fear the other. Dragons can be very dangerous and destructive creatures, even if these dragons are peaceful and wouldn’t harm a fly, so far everything that we’ve seen indicates that they’re the minority, with every other Dragon that we’ve seen being belligerent and selfish, having to be threatened into submission before they’re willing to listen to logic.
It COULD have been a great Spike-centric story as he tried to act like the mediator between the two species, as well as divorcing his own prejudices, and learning of the story of Dragontown. Maybe even learning the reason why Dragons tend to be so belligerent and territorial: They’re deep down afraid of the time when ponies inevitable expand over them and drives them homeless, and quite a few of the Dragons in the town didn’t join exactly because they wanted to live in peace, but because they wanted to start paving a possible future for Dragons already in the future before it’s too late.
Yeah I think it needed 2 or 3 issues for this kind of story.
Honestly?
The problem here was that this was to big a concept to be relegated to one issue. It should have had a main comic arc devoted towards developing it.
Fair enough. I will agree that it didn’t really feel like a “Friends Forever” comic. Luna and Spike’s relationship wasn’t actually the central part of the comic.
-Lumino
Yeah, but it’s not smart about it. It just says “Racism is bad” and leaves it at that.
Ok, great, Racism is bad, good message, we’re all already on board. How about providing an actual meaty story, and characters that aren’t just mouthpieces?
For fuck sake, Luna barely did anything in the comic.
Honestly, I didn’t think the writing was that bad. See, the basic premise of the story WAS actually early 20th century racism, before people began to call it “Tumblr the Comic”. People do things they don’t PERCEIVE as racism (racial profiling) in the name of security.
-WW2 Japanese Interment Camps? For their own safety and the safety of the public.
-Post 9/11 Middle Eastern Homeland Security? Same deal.
This crap still happens in our world, so why are we all crying foul when someone implies it could happen in their world too? It’s a classic case of the Association Fallacy. Just because Tumblr SJW’s hold certain views, doesn’t mean those views can never be valid.
It’s basically the “Hitler liked Dogs, therefore people who like dogs are evil” argument.*
Talking about racism, profiling and such doesn’t make you a SJW, but these are things that SJW’s do. Learn the difference.
