There’s no way that any of the bowdlerization originated at DHX; they never would have put the episode on the air in the first place if it had occurred to any of them that anyone might be offended by any part of it. The whole thing was Apple’s fault for overreacting to a tiny number of complaints from perpetual pearl-clutchers and insisting that the episode be altered or they wouldn’t run it on iTunes, and Hasbro Corporate figured that if Apple didn’t want the original then it was probably too problematic for general release either.
 
Given how Derpariffic the merchandise stream has been in the last year, I think it’s a safe bet that Hasbro would have kept the unfscked version for every venue except iTunes if they’d known then how beloved the character really was, as she really was; it would have been an interesting marketing experiment to see the sales/viewership difference between them if that had happened.
 
…Then again, if Hasbro had possessed that kind of popularity-predicting foresight from the beginning, I’m convinced that Lauren Herself would have been running the show at least through Season 3, which would have been a regular 26 episode season that didn’t end with an extra Alicorn, and the show would have been planned right out of the starting gate for six seasons and a movie six movies.

Honestly, I think the worst part about the whole thing was that we were specifically told that ONLY the iTunes release would be edited, but instead all future releases of the episode were edited.

Eh, I just assume BronyUser is someone who wasn’t involved with the online fandom until very recently, and missed all the drama and raging the first several times it happened.

Oh for hell’s sake. Hasn’t this been explained countless times already? People on tumblr got butthurt because they’ve been told that “derp” is ableist. A couple of handful of those eternally butthurt people sent e-mails to Hasbro and from there one thing led to another.

The Friendship Express DVD (the first DVD ever released for FiM) still has the unaltered scene.

Amy Keating Rogers, who wrote “The Last Roundup”, also wrote an email explaining what happened from her perspective; since she’s a freelance writer for the show, she wasn’t privy to everything that happened, but it’s the only lengthy comment on the whole sorry situation from anyone connected with the show that we’ve got. Also note that even in the edited scene, Derpy’s eyes are derped for most of the scene, just not as much as they were in the original version.

I’ll never understand this; are there really people still sputtering in rage over this, or are these images uploaded by trolls who get enjoyment out of messages just like this?
