I’ve always imagined that Maud is Autistic, and the Pie family never had enough money to see a psychiatrist and get her diagnosed.
The reason why Maud is so protective of Pinkie is because she’s the only pony who’s been able to break through Maud’s rocky she’ll and make her smile.
