Its a different thing though.  
Dragons, as seen by most, are supposed to have wings.  
Unicorns aren’t supposed to grow wings. For Twilight the wings just represented a huge, general change.  
For Spike, gaining wings just means he’s growing up.

Looks like a sharper Spike mostly other than the red eyes
 
The real question is, could this fandom handle another character gaining wings?

Well, old Spike:  

Finally a true young dragon. Dragons have wings and this Spike does.

The only flaw I can see in this is Spike looks a little too much like a Sonic character.
 
Which isn’t really a flaw, because Sonic characters make chibi look bad-ass.
