Well, think of it this way:
 
You’re an artist living in Japan. You had english classes back in high school, and your grades were decent, but you’re not anywhere close to being fluent. Though you have had a bit more exposure to it than usual by way of watching fansubs of that cool pony show that the americans are making. You even thought that second human movie was pretty cool, especially the villainesses. What was that one with the purple hair called? Oh yeah, she was アリア ブレイズ (A-ri-a Bu-rei-zu).
 
So, you decide to make some art of them. And then, you decide to go a bit further and make mock-up trading cards, with english text (because english text is cool). But… even if english text is cool, it’s still not easy to parse those weird symbols. You’re still used to Hiragana and Katakana. Bu-rei-zu… you guess that the ‘rei’ syllable is spelled ‘RA’. After all, your cursory research showed that ‘rei” and ‘ra’ (with a long ‘A’) are pronounced the same way, so you guess that’s right, or at least close enough.
