It’s not that they’re mating, it’s just that it’s embarrassing to translate that butterfly pillow talk into pony language.
panel one - rd asks flutters if she can understand any kind of animal (hear their voices), and flutters responds in the affirmative – she can get the gist at least
panel two - rd points out the butterflies and asks if she can hear those
panel three - rd keeps goading and asking what they’re saying
panel four - rd addresses fluttershy directly and repeats the question from panel three. fluttershy is unable to respond.
RD just wants to know what they’re saying
