You can make your own figs, vehicles and machines from carsstock. I do and it works fine.

In hindsight, that army deal set is probably nearer 1000 points, depending on what you equip everything with.
 
Still, it’s a good core for a force. If you do decide to go ahead with this, however, get yourself a storm talon. Or a Storm Raven if you have the funds.  
Seriously, fliers in the current rules are a must.
 
Always recommend a unit of thunder hammer/storm shield terminators too (funnily enough, exactly what’s in the pic here). They’re damn near impossible to kill, and with 3 strength 8 attacks each on the charge, they’re lethal to pretty much anything in the game.  
You’ll find either your opponent throws everything they’ve got at them, (meaning the rest of your force goes unmolested), or they ignore them, (which means they can just wreak havoc).

Yet again, when Joey uploads something I’ve painted, it gets a minus score…
 
I tend to stick to uploading pictures of the models that have the faces of the ponies on them. (I.E. the vehicles for the most part).

Yeah, that’s what I’ve done with my entire pony themed army. Gave me a unique force, and they’re quite fun to paint. Means every unit is different, rather than painting the same color scheme over and over and over….

I understand the cost is ridiculous nowadays. I’ve been reading through the Horus Heresy novels recently, and I quite enjoyed the background myself, but I know the whole ‘Humanity’s stuck in a rut and is being slowly torn apart by aliens and traitors’ thing isn’t to everyone’s taste.
 
As for costing a grand for a playable army, however, I know you can get the marine army deal box set for around £150, and that gives you something near 1500 points straight away. (I think it’s got a commander, command squad, razorback, 2 marine units, scout squad, assault squad, drop pod, and a venerable dreadnought in it).
 
Get that and the marine rulebook and you’re good to go.
 
I know my local club, (trying to sell off the stock), has this very set in for £95, and I’m seriously considering getting it to get my Blood Angels force underway. I don’t think a commander, attack bike and Baal predator really constitute a playable force somehow…

I really wish I could like 40k, since a lot of my friends play it. But the fluff, and the fact I don’t have a grand to throw at it just to get a playable army, really turn me off of it. Still… Every time I see these models, I kinda want to give it another try.

Oooh, I like the idea of having the units in a SMarines army be themed after a different pony each.
