I get the same feeling that they are going to stick with what’s familiar and safe. They’re not going to start referencing things that they didn’t come up with. But as denialish as it sounds, I really don’t think we’ve seen enough evidence in the writing to prove their relationship (or most prospective relationships) beyond friendship, and that’s the way it’s always going to be.

I want to apologize in advance; shipping is a touchy business. I agree that Fluttermac will not–and moreover should not–become canon, regardless of how much I love this ship (though I also hope with equal fervor that Cherrimac does not become cannon either…I like to dream, and would hate to see dreams of others crushed, one way or the other.) However, the notion that Fluttershy and Big Macintosh only share one common feature is something I utterly reject.
 
For starters, and possibly most importantly, both share a keen interest in the natural world, Flutters with her Fauna and Mac with his Flora. We also know that, at least for the former, the interest in flora is mutual: Fluttershy gushes over the gardens of Canterlot and keeps an extensive garden of her own. Moreover, both seek to tame nature; creating a vision of order out of the entropy. Indeed, Fluttershy’s gift is one of communication: She is able–to unknown degree–understand and respond to animals, essentially giving her the power to guide creatures out of their instincts. Big Macintosh’s mark is ambiguous, but probably is a result of his joy in seeing the apple trees give bounties of fruit.
 
I believe other points of connection, but I have droned in your ear for far too long! Hope you did not mind this rant too much.

I love Fluttermac and have had since before Season 1 ended, but even I admit it’s far more likely the show is putting Mac and Cheerilee together, thanks to frequent background appearances and other interactions. Thankfully, ain’t canon yet, so I can ship who I want.

What you just said applies to Fluttermac. Two characters never interacting means they have little relationship to begin with, so romance is out the window of possibility. But he has spoken and has been seen with Cheerilee.
 
Also, who says he’s a student? He could be an assistant teacher or a student teacher.

Well it’s a silly complaint that the two never interact or never would interact because both of them are know for not being interactive to begin with, it doesn’t just limit Fluttermac, it makes it hard to envision Big Mac hitting it off with anyone.
 
Secondly, Equestria Girls kind of puts the kibosh on Cheerimac with the student and teacher thing and the comics imply their roles as well. So I really don’t think any ship (that doesn’t involve Twilight) is going to win out in the end.

No, it won’t. See, Fluttershy and Big Mac only share one characteristic and nothing else. Just because they don’t speak very often (Although for different reasons, Flutters being shy and Big Mac just choosing/being forced not to) doesn’t mean they’re compatible.
 
And romance isn’t a huge factor in MLP. How many little girls do you think have trouble with boys? None. Why do you think they’ve made Equestria Girls? To appeal to the older girls. And even then, it seems they’re hinting at Cheerimac more, due to a scene where they’re seen walking together.

@PonyPon: Doesn’t matter, the suits will ensure it happens. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was revealed in a season 5 episode.

I don’t care what Naruto did, that’s certainly not how this show works.

@PonyPon: But that’s exactly why it will become canon. We’ve seen it happen with Naruto, and it’s pretty much in line with the adage “the customer (or in this case, the fandom) is always right”. Thus, Hasbro will insure it becomes canon irregardless of what the authors’ intent was.
