I guess that’s why I hang here more than DA and Tumblr. :3
Can’t really remember, but I will say you guys are ever so much nicer than my other critics.
It wasn’t the artstyle I was thinking of, but the cutie mark reminded me of something I saw recently. I finally realized what it is.
Well, okay not completely but that’s what it reminds me of. Which, now that I think about it, makes sense.
Didn’t ask on that other thread: When did you join ‘booru and why subject yourself to others’… Criticisms, to put it mildly. X3
Ponies Forever!
I wouldn’t bet too much on the latter.
For me, it’s anime and ponies.
I was trying to say anime itself will never become dated.
Except that anime styles go out of date all the time. In fact, once you know how anime’s art evolution works, you can pretty easily tell when most anime were made to within a few years just by looking. (exceptions include things from well-known decade-spanning creators with distinct styles, like Hayao Miyazaki and Rumiko Takahashi, though adapting their styles to animation has evolved over the decades too). Personally, I’ve become partial to where anime’s artstyle was in the early 80’s, despite getting into anime with shows from the mid/late-90’s.
That’s not always the case for American cartoons due to the more stylized art and producers’ insistence on strictly keeping to a “house style” for legacy series.
The style of this piece looks “ever-fresh” now because it heavily apes K-On!, a series that’s still hugely influential artistically more than six years after it first aired. Some later popular series, like Madoka Magica and Attack On Titan, clearly have character design nods to K-On and the Moë movement it was a part of.
TL;DR - I like this drawing, but to say it won’t look dated in a decade is silly.
Yeah, that’s what threw me off. I didn’t even notice the cutie mark until you mentioned it.
On a side note, I feel like I’ve seen this artstyle somewhere before.
Well, he does have the same shield, just replacing the magic spark with a lightning bolt. Also, for whatever reason, he doesn’t have the spiky hair, so it’s easy to make that mistake.
