My headcanon is that Equestria has “gold bits”, “silver bits”, and “copper bits” like the GP, SP, and CP in D&D.

The gold bits have Celestia’s portrait on the obverse and her cutie mark on the reverse, the silver bits have Luna’s portrait and mark, and the copper ones have something random like a horseshoe or the Equestrian coat of arms.
