The locomotive did not run in the story, they explicitly said the caboose was for braking.
There was a brief period in railroad tech in which air brakes relied on positive pressure direct from a compressor on the locomotive. If one car disconnected, it would result in a complete loss of braking power across the entire train. This could be fixed on the fly by shutting the open valve cock at the breakaway.
(The successor to the system, the Westinghouse system, uses negative pressure to apply the brakes; Meaning a breakaway would activate the brakes along the entire train, including the disconnected stock)
AND she was WEAKENED at this point. She can’t even lift her gun out.
Nope. At this point in the story, the only thing she can do with magic is lift heavy things for brief periods of time. Fancy things like teleportation are waaaaaay out of her league.
