Sorry I forgot how old it was when I first noticed that comment.
In regards to the image’s message while I agree we shouldn’t insult each other with insult slur terms, we also shouldn’t make every word offensive either, or look for “racism/sexism” where there isn’t any. Like that pic the artist made complaining about the term “man up.” (Which ironically is more insulting to men, then it is women.)
Well, there is a thread where you can talk all the shit. I’m not sure if I allowed to link to threads, but you can find it easily.
I love it when comment threads are resurrected after 9 months. It gives me an opportunity to talk more shit.
Well said. Also, sadly every race is guilty of things like slavery, and treating others differently/badly if you look throughout history.
I read that African people were actually selling their own kind as slaves to the whites, so they also helped encouraged slavery. I also read surprisingly the first documented slave-owner in North America was black.
Also, before anyone gets on my case for defending “whitey,” I’m not excusing the racism from them, but I’m not from any other race either. In fact, I’m a mixed race myself, part Native American, (my Great Grandmother was born in Indian territory too) and they’ve had their fair share of troubles too. Still, you don’t see me acting like whites are the only people guilty of causing problems.
White-guilt, and white-shaming just creates more racial tensions.
Yeah, Its stupid. It’s essentially white guilt.
“Don’t you know what white people did 100 years ago?!”
And? I see people in movements claiming to want equality assaulting people for not agreeing that white = evil and everything else a pure good. Most of them really do it to feel morally soupier even when bossing the minorities around (Melissa Click comes to mind)
Not to mention the places today that still have slavery and such, but these hypocrites don’t care, because they’re not white. If anyone’s the racists it’s these people as 1, they believe whites no matter what must suffer for some alleged ill and 2, no one else can be racist towards them because they might have been ‘oppressed’
Oppressing the oppressor does not solve the issue, you’re just flipping the oppression.
It’s a shame to see a good artist turn out to be an unappealing/hypocritical person…
Also, I find it funny alot of the hatred I see against white people online is from mostly white people.
Some of the people you’re going after are fully accepting of other races and only use those terms in jest. By condemning them, you make them feel that the fandom doesn’t accept them unless they censor themselves beyond what they see as reasonable.
In this instance, you may be the one who needs to show more tolerance. If the intention is not to offend, you should not make a point of taking offense, especially when you’re not even part of the group you’re trying to make a statement for. When you start getting offended on behalf of others toward behavior that isn’t actually malicious, you have become the sort of thing Tumblr is infamous for.
You can’t protect people from being offended. You shouldn’t. Everything offends someone.
It’s not a dichotomy. The answer is “Both.”
I genuinely think it must be, like, super weird to be a black MLP fan and see “nigger nigger nigger” absolutely everywhere. I’m sure it varies from person to person; Some are surely not bothered, but a number of such fans within my circle of friends have expressed how uncomfortable it makes them and how they don’t exactly feel welcome in some fandom circles. In some small way, I feel like just seeing that those opinions aren’t unanimous is helpful. It’s a way of saying, “Yes, you are welcome here, and I’m sorry certain others haven’t made you feel that way.”
So while it does personally make me feel better, I also genuinely believe that calling out prejudice makes a difference; Even if it changes absolutely zero minds, it does send a message to the people that the prejudiced remarks were made about - that we don’t all agree with them, and that our community isn’t a place where that kind of thing goes completely unchallenged. Speaking as a man, I myself feel similar relief when I see a woman on Tumblr speak up for men and call out the extreme anti-man sentiments than can crop up there. So it isn’t just for personal validation; It’s also because I just want to be a good human being and help people feel accepted here, because I do genuinely think our fandom is an accepting place, even with its vocal minority of not-so-accepting people.
Of course we can fight it when it’s genuine, I do so myself. But are you doing this to help people, or to make yourself feel better? You said that you feel like a bad person when you see others use a slur. Is that healthy? It sounds like you have the wrong motives here- making yourself feel better instead of stopping those who are doing real harm.
If there were a bunch of people talking among themselves who had racist views but weren’t acting against anyone, would you still make a point of going after them?
I said this before, I don’t want to “control” others. I know they have a right to say prejudiced things. I don’t want to take that right away. Criticism is not censorship.
And I know this isn’t entirely unrelatable to the derpibooru userbase. You guys get (rightfully) upset when certain segments of Tumblr make blanket statements against all men (or even more specifically, against male MLP fans). I do too; That’s wrong, and they shouldn’t do that. It’s also just as wrong for us to turn around and do the same thing, albeit against women, or gay people, or ethnic minorities, or what have you. If we’re gonna get upset when Tumblr does it, but do the same thing ourselves, what are we doing? Is it not a bit hypocritical?
BP, you can’t make yourself responsible for correcting every single thing you see done wrong. You certainly can’t let yourself feel guilty for not making others think the way you believe they should. You’ll drive yourself insane trying. And honestly, by being so easily offended even by people who mean no harm, you make yourself appear controlling and impossible to satisfy. That’s not an impression you want to give. If you correct people to alleviate your own guilt, are you really doing it for the right reasons?
Do it for others, not for yourself. Only speak if you truly believe they need to hear it. To quote an old phrase: “Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools speak because they have to say something.”
I agree with most of what you say except that we have to accept racism. We can’t stop it from existing, but we can still fight it when it’s doing harm and explain the problems with it to those who think race is actually a good or bad factor in a person.
That said, I only take issue with genuine racism, not a person saying words like “nigger” in a purely comedic or casual sense. The comedic value in most humor that uses such terms doesn’t come from appeal to actual racist thinking anyway. It’s more like a form of absurd self-deprecation on the part of the one making the joke.
I don’t do that though. My philosophy really is, “As long as you’re a good person, you’re cool with me and we can be friends.” Race doesn’t play into that. Nor does sex, sexuality, religion, whatever. If we get along and have stuff in common, that’s all I need. So no, I don’t accept that racism is “just human nature,” because I myself don’t feel it toward anyone. Keep in mind, this also applies to hardcore Tumblr “death to whites” types too; I condemn racial prejudice against everyone, so let no one say I’m a hypocrite.
Just… when people do embrace racial prejudice, it just hurts, man. I hate it so much, and I personally feel like a shitty person when I see other people do it. I feel like it’s reflecting on me somehow, and I need to call that shit out to disassociate myself from it. Because if I don’t, I feel like… I dunno, like I’m giving it a pass. Condoning it somehow. Voicing my opposition to racial prejudice is not stifling anyone’s free speech (they have the right to say whatever stupid thing they want), but it is a way that I can exercise mine, and - if nothing else - allows me to clearly disown and disavow the types of people who do promote bigotry.
Aww don’t be that way baby gurl.
@Background Pony #8329
I believe you misunderstand me. When I say “get a rise.” I aint talkin about just doin it for the lulz, but about usin it to make niggas feel angry or offended. When a word has that much power over another person, it becomes a tool for anyone, from the edgy kid on xbox to the Lv 99 Klan Wizard or whatever. Don’t really matter if that nigga honestly believe in his racial superiority. Niggas is free to believe whatever they want to believe, no matter how right or wrong. Imma tell you now tho, you won’t be changin any minds by tellin honkeys what they can and can’t say.
If you tryina defuse racism, good luck nigga. People have always rallied around what separates Us from Them, be it a tribe, nation, race, religion, or even a sports team. Way Niggertron see it, racism is human nature. We just gotta accept it and try not to kill each other over it.
I didn’t start any more arguments. I was continuing the argument I already started.
Genuinely not being sarcastic here either. I continued talking because I thought that was allowed. If it’s not, I’ll stop.
You’re an idiot sir.
I think I said to not start any more arguments on old drama pictures.
Saying it looks bad because of subpar artistic talent is fine. Saying it looks bad because you don’t personally like the race is racist. I think that’s a pretty easy difference.
Anyway, that’s not the “only reason,” or even the main reason, people use slurs. Most people who use slurs use them because on some level they believe what the slur represents. The sort of person who calls black people “niggers” isn’t usually just doing it to get a rise out of people; They’re doing it because they genuinely believe black people are inferior for one reason or another. They might enjoy provoking people, they might very well enjoy “the lulz,” but the source is still - almost always - that they do believe what they’re saying, at least a little bit. After all, it’s just as easy to “get a rise” out of people by doing things that don’t celebrate hatred and prejudice. Nah, I believe that almost always, its rooted in actual belief in addition to the desire to provoke. Not 100% of the time perhaps, but absolutely most of the time.
Speak of the nigga and he shall appear.
Look nigga the only reason people use slurs, racist or not, is because they know it a way to get a rise out of they target. When a nigga call you something you don’t like and yo response is to get upset or “call them out,” they aint gon start respectin you all of a sudden. You just showed someone who don’t like you a very easy way to hurt you. If instead you decide not to care, that nigga gon realize that words cannot hurt you, and since he probably too much of a bitchass nigga to actually do anything to hurt you, will shut up.
Niggas has been trying for decades to get errbody to stop sayin “nigger.” When they gon realize that if they truly care, they shouldn’t care?
As for humanizations, you can do a humanization any way you like, but if it look bad, as the more “diverse” ones tend to, you can’t hide behind the shield of racism to void criticism. That’s another discussion tho.
I don’t agree with that philosophy, really, particularly because it’s usually said by people who are in that weird “I’m halfway joking but actually am kind of racist” category; Usually meant to provoke people rather than supposedly re-appropriating the word into something less negative.
I’m all for freedom of speech, but people need to remember that calling them out for saying prejudiced things (slurs, etc.) is not somehow censorship or a violation of their free speech rights. Person A has the right to spout bigoted bile, but Person B has the right to publicly denounce and call Person A out for it, and even say “I think you should stop doing that” if they’re so inclined. That is not an affront to free speech because Person B is not the government and has no power to fine or arrest Person A. It’s a simple concept, but a lot of people who use racial slurs regularly like to go “I have free speech, so you can’t say anything to me!” When… y’know, that’s not what free speech actually means.
Yeah though. EQG made the right choice by leaving the races ambiguous, a la Doug, I think. You can project any ethnicity (or none at all) onto them you want. With that said, fan-humanizations of any race are fine. I don’t mind if they use normal human colors instead of candy-colors like the ponies. White/Black/Asian/whatever Rarity is still Rarity, and I like her no matter what she looks like.
nah, the guy with the philosophy that if you say a word, like slurs, enough, they lose most of the meaning, and that words only give power to them if you let them, something like that. it’s inherently anti-racist
I don’t understand why there even has to be * white * humanizations either! They’re pony colored. Twi’s Purple. Fluttershy is yellow. Rarity is white. Rainbow is gay. Applejack is a background pony. Pinkie does so much cocaine that she vibrates. I mean come on, we should stick to what the show gives us on some things instead of turning it into a race thing.
The guy who gets upset every time someone draws a non-white humanization? I haven’t heard from him in months, but hopefully he’s doing better. I don’t know.
Again, I think the opposite - getting mad at white humanizations - is also dumb. So nobody try the hypocrite card with me, because it won’t work. Why can’t we just enjoy humans of all kinds without having to get racist about it?
Tell Lord NiggerTron that.
For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t be okay with prejudice against white people either.
However, going “Well, they’re prejudiced against white people so I’m just gonna shout all these ethnic slurs about other races just to get even with them” seems really counterproductive and sinks to - and arguably beneath - their level.
I dunno. I feel like this community’s smart enough to know that you can be anti-racist without being anti-white. We’re not Stormfront after all. We know anti-racism is a good thing and isn’t always (or even usually) tied to a dislike of white people.
