The last two shorts, “Shake Your Tail!” and “Perfect Day for Fun”, fit perfectly as sequels to the movie (if you ignore the daydream explanation from the novelization, which just doesn’t fit). First off all, it’s only possible for Twilight to get back into the human world after the movie, since she found a way to reopen the portal. Also, you’d notice that the group’s anthropony forms feature the “Rainbow Power” hair, something that isn’t added until the end of the movie. Their costumes are also better-looking and more personalized, Rarity having taken into account some of the complaints about the initial set. As for why Sunset Shimmer is nowhere to be seen, whatever the reason that would explain why they’d call on Twilight for both performances, to have a sixth member at hand for the song.

Even once they’re rainbowfied in the movie, their hairstyles don’t look as ridicously long

I prefer more outfits from shorts.
 
I think these shorts are sfter the movie, bacause Twilight can freely go beetween the dimensions.

The outfits from the short were much better

If they wore their outfits from “Perfect Day for Fun” with their normal hairstyles (it was silly as ponies and it only gets worse in human form), then it’d be perfect.

The fact that she had to do with the outfits which were backstage? (still, putting on these leggings was a huge mistake, it wouldn’t be so bad without them)

I guess that was a small improvement (the lack of stupid eye paint). Still, the top outfits make sense. The bottom ones? Rarity, what have you been smoking?

The outfits on the top are better.
 
I was bummed we didn’t actually get them in the movie.

The first must be Human Twi.

The movie versions win, they just look like they are one band, while the short versions look like there all over the place.
 
As for where the last two shorts fit in continuity, they don’t, there just music videos. I think only the first 6 shorts work in continuity, but I do think it’s odd Sunset shimmer wasn’t in the shorts, but then again I also think the shorts are leftovers from an aborted EG2 script. Why else is the EG2 book based off of the shorts, Sunset Shimmer was never meant to return, until fan criticism of the first film saved her.

i can’t get over the leggings in the second. i prefer the top.

I prefer the short’s ones, but the ones they took in the movie make more sense considering the situation (Rarity couldn’t really go back to her shop to take their outfits)

Maybe After the Dazzling were defeted,Princapal Celstia decided to pay every student a ticket to a local fair that nigth as compensation for exposing them to another mind controlling extradiemensional maniacal plot involving horse women. And so in the couple of hours they had before dawn the mane six all had fun and what not. That the best I can come up with.

Though I don’t think the portals technically always open so much as it can be opened whenever they want to open it.

I’m inclined to believe neither of the two last shorts are canon.

Now I find myself wondering where “Perfect Day” fits into the timeline. Twilight was obsessing over that counterspell for much of the time she was there…

Yeah, I think that’s what killed it for me their movie outfits. I think the top on Twilight is not that bad. The only thing the top one needs to do is remove that face paint around their eyes.

Top, they look more like the doll versions too.

i do like the first ones better cause they’re cheesier…but i dare hazard the guess that they would’ve been harder to animate continuously.  
and i gotta say i’m still impressed they made the other ones work. despite their garishness, they don’t actually hurt my eyes.
