so hey, just a reminder: this is a my little pony blog that I do for fun, when I have both the time and inclination. there is no schedule beyond whenever, and there may be long periods without any updates. sorry!
that said, I appreciate all of the support, and Im glad you guys are enjoying my stupid not-really-steampunk doodles! (even if I have no idea what Im doing half the time oh well)

I won’t promote it or anything (don’t have much means by which to do so) but this is some amazing stuff. I hope one day it does reach a wide audience among the fandom, because I do believe they’d enjoy it.
In other words, you’re worried that newcomers not already familiar with your work will be completely lost.
To be honest, though, it feels pretty self-contained all on its own. Plus, it could be the gateway to your other stuff like Moonstuck and Slice of Pony Life the way Inconvenient Trixie was for me.
Just think, if not for Inconvenient Trixie, I’d have never fallen in love with Moonstuck or Pony Life, or found out about this new one. Such a tragedy scarcely bears considering.
well…this is pretty much just an offshoot of the doodles I was doing on my regular tumblr; I don’t think it’s really accessible to people who aren’t already familiar with my stuff. which is why I’ve been asking people not to rec/promo it, because while I definitely appreciate the support, I think it just works best with a smaller crowd who already sorta know what to expect! I know that sounds weird, but I’m not quite sure how to explain it any better. :x
It had better be. I’m not paying it to slack off.
I suspect it was more, “What am I looking at here?! Error! Error!”
Granted, it was a bit much. I’ll strive to ensure proper spelling so as to lighten it’s load. Then again, I always do that so it was probably just slacking off.
It was probably overwhelmed, the poor thing.
I’d have gone with “Pointyrobotponypeoplehavingawesomerobotponypeopleadventuresquestria” but that works too.
Incidentally, my spellchecker isn’t counting that as a false word, unlike Steamquestria.
I tuned out after Ego said, “I’m gonna go draw more pointy robot pony people.”
Everything else became irrelevant.
@Solitude
So if Egophiliacs new story is not steampunk, or gaslamp, could we just call this theme Steamquestria?
^ This dude.
Really, let’s forget about categories and enjoy the ride :D
All that matters, really. Call it what you will, just see that you want to do it and have fun. That’s the important bit.
hmm, well, gaslamp is so closely-linked to steampunk that I’m not sure I should be calling it that either (it’s a bit of an oversimplification, but the distinction seems to be roughly that steampunk = science fiction, gaslamp = science fantasy). steamquestria is still missing both the steam-power and the alternate history, which are the two major elements of the genre.
BUT YEAH like I said I’m not really worried over finding the right word to describe it, I just want to draw pointy robot pony people having awesome robot pony people adventures (and maybe learning a little something about themselves along the way???). this is more me going “yeah I know it’s not actually steampunk, I’m not really trying to make it true steampunk, but there’s some similar stuff so if you like steampunk and gaslamp and that kinda thing then maybe you might like this? (or not and that’s cool too!)”
…so yeah in retrospect steamquestria is. really not the best name for it. but at the time I was planning on using steam-power and I guess it sorta gives you an idea of what the general atmosphere of the world is like? …this is making my head hurt, I’m gonna go draw more pointy robot pony people.
Wouldn’t be the first.
So Egolamp then? That sounds kinda like a shipping name, like I want to ship Egophiliac with some OC named Lamp….
It still lacks the “punk”.
I’ve seen the term “gaslamp fantasy” used for this sort of thing. If you must reduce it to a label, that may be the best fit.
Oh God just read this comment coming back for more words.
To compare it to the cyberpunk genre that steampunk is a reference to, having cleaner lines and more acceptable tech would be post-steampunk. Much like how The Diamond Age by Stephenson is post-cyberpunk, with cleaner tech, and a more conscientious world, compared to the bleeding edge dirty tech of, say, Gibson’s Islands in the Net.
Yeah, that’s what I meant. Being vaguely alchemy-powered with Victorian influences is just as much steampunk as anyone can claim anything is steampunk. :)
The steampunk genre is rife with attempts to draw old sci-fi into it without understanding that sci-fi, and has mostly been filled out with “There’s brass, gears, and Victorian-era clothes. Done.” So Steamquestria fits in there pretty well!
Which, I doubt you care, but the term ‘steampunk’ is based off of cyberpunk, yet carries nothing over from the ‘punk’ aspect of ‘cyberpunk.’ The important themes of cyberpunk are “high-tech and low life,” or “sci-fi is how technology will make things better; cyberpunk is how it won’t.” So it’s weird the genre claiming to be steampunk focuses pretty much entirely on the nobility/aristocrats/moneyed people of the Victorian age instead of the underclass that would most certainly be suffering the appearance of all of this new technology.
But yeah, I really like Steamquestria, and yeah, having an exact term for what genre it is isn’t necessary.
And now I’ve also said a lot of words, woo!
That…actually made sense to me.
I always figured steampunk to be, for want of a better word, dirty in the sense there’d be hissing of steam escaping pipes, or dirt and oil from how crude the tech is and so on.
Your stuff is a lot cleaner than what I normally expect steampunk to be like, but I guess steampunk is the easiest way to describe it.
idk I feel weird calling it steampunk or gaslamp when the only thing it really has in common is sorta-Victorian fashion (and also robots I guess)! like I started out thinking it would be all steam-based but now it’s become more of an alchemy-powered society and I’m not sure of the term for that. (also it’s missing the historical aspect so it may be disqualified on principle…)
someone suggested clockpunk, which is apparently the renaissance-equivalent of steampunk, but while it sounds like a closer fit (though it seems like it’s more on the mechanical side than the alchemical?) I’m not really familiar with its standards so I’m hesitant to say that’s what it is. although the renaissance had some pretty rad hats going on. AJ in a cross between a stetson and a gable hood: y/y?
I’m not too concerned with finding the “right” term or label, I’m just having fun with it! but I do know that it’s developed into something that isn’t really steampunk at all and I just like to be clear about the distinction between “inspired by a genre” and “actually trying to make something that fits into that genre”. if, uh, that makes sense?
(that was a lot of words and I’m still not sure how to explain it, I’m sorry!)
Thank you for the nice comic so far!
