Your comment looked like it was written under the assumption I was implying she used the lure to attract males. On that note, I suppose it could be used for such purposes in the deep ocean if for no other reason that to help pinpoint the female’s exact location to males, as it’s rather dark down there, but that’s not its main function.

Female anglerfish don’t use their lures to attract males, they use them to attract food. Male anglerfish, however, only live long enough to find a female and bite her. They remain attached to her and slowly shrivel up into nothing but a set of gonads fed by the female’s body. They fertilize one set of eggs, and are then discarded. Since by this point things like their digestive tracts and gills have long since been destroyed, they die pretty quickly after being dropped.
