Okay, goofy head-canon time: Derpy and Rainbow Dash are sisters.

I figure Rainbow Dash doesn’t publicly acknowledge their relationship because Derpy is, well, derpy, and RD finds her kind of embarassing and totally uncool to be hanging around with. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love her klutz of a sister, though–as the Element of Loyalty, she stands by her, sticks up for her and tries to protect her from her clumsiness, even if she tries hard not to let the other ponies see it.
