That’s…that’s actually an interesting idea.
 
When both of the alicorns responsible for moon and sun finally die, whether to natural causes (they might have an increased lifespan, but even an alicorn can’t go on forever) or to injury, only one is created by magic means that I don’t feel like thinking up right now - there’s just so much power that goes into the creation of one, the universe can’t spare that much power. So the created princess imprints on a young pony that’s capable of holding alicorn magic, and through care and love bits of her power transfer to the younger. Eventually, through age and the new magic, the younger becomes an alicorn and is capable of controlling the other celestial body.
 
It needs refining, but I like the idea so far.
