Aaaaand now all I can think of is Q (or discord, alternatively) in a sailor suit sipping frufru cocktails on a handsome mahogany yacht, steering the boat with his propped up feet.
He does that. Been a while since he’s been to any convention. Dude’s not young.
I wonder if he ever did his sailing stunt like he wanted. He said in 2011 at a con that he wanted to sail alone to the South Seas, so he wouldn’t be doing any cons or things in the first half of 2012. But I hadn’t heard whether he pulled it off or had to postpone it.
he didnt attended any brony convention like in a more than year now
He gets paid for a full day to go down to the studio and read lines for half an hour. What’s not to like? It’s much, much easier than doing live action TV.
Plus, he actually likes the brony fandom. The Trekkies always weirded him out a bit, but he seems to have personally embraced and championed the bronies.
That actually is a surprisingly valid kind of point you make.
Its most reasonable without making few pages of character analysis
Oh you silly shipper you.
DeLancie is a professional, I doubt he’d walk away from it even if he did get tired of it.
I sure hope so. I have this lingering fear that DeLancie will get tired of doing the voice work at some point.
That would have been amazing, even (dare I say it?) moving. Hopefully we will get some decent character development for him in s5.
Yeah, rounding out his character arc was a good idea… but if only Discord had come to those realizations on his own, I would have appreciated his enlightenment more. He almost comes across as merely having regrets because things didn’t work out the way he had expected. Presumably, if Tirek hadn’t betrayed him, he would have merrily gone on being evil and making Fluttershy cry. I would have loved to see him stop at some point and say, you know what? This isn’t as fun as it used to be.
I suspect that will be the case but I look at it the same way I do comics: Just because the people writing the characters sometimes make bad decisions I don’t stop liking the characters and know eventually they’ll do right in the end.
You do raise a good point about Discord playing second fiddle to Tirek though, one I had not considered before. It is the Worf effect in a different form.
Still, on balance I like his arc in the s4 finale as he actually goes through one instead of abruptly changing his mind at the last minute.
Funny you should mention that last bit, because I agree that it always looked like pre-reform Discord was no mere troublemaker, but rather a full-on evil dastard. He was intentionally cruel, and got a kick out of seeing friendships turn into bitter rivalry or apathy and abandonment, not to mention trading reason for insanity. Talk about horrible.
I also would’ve loved to have seen a gradual process by which Discord learned to appreciate his relationship with Fluttershy in an increasingly deep way throughout that short season, and I definitely would have taken that over whatever the heck happened in Magical Mystery Cure. Still, KCaFO was a decent enough beginning.
Of course, it was appropriate that they continued to have Discord messing with people after that point, but I was pretty disappointed with what happened at the end of S4. If it was merely Discord’s old ways sneaking back into his life to the point where he hurt the ponies he had begun to care about, that would have been one thing; but turning sidekick for pathetic old Tirek without any decent cause? That was such a letdown. Discord was never the type to play second fiddle, and there was nothing Tirek could offer him that he couldn’t take on his own. Eh, could have been done better.
As a side note, I really want to know how Discord plans to earn Fluttershy’s good graces again, because if everything is just hunky dory again I’m gonna be mad.
I think he’s MUST make some new friends in season 5, or else it’s all in vain. My bet: it’s Twilight, or/and Pinkie Pie. Or another of mane 6.
I will concede that it shows depth on Fluttershy’s part though I will take the cowards way out and claim I simply worded my criticism poorly.
However I firmly believe that a redemption story should focus firmly on the character to be redeemed and I do not see the appropriate development on Discord’s end to make redemption believable.
Perhaps if it was longer and they had more of a chance to really show Shy effecting a change in Discord or if he in someway expressed empathy for her during the episode.
As a thought experiment image a version of Season 3 where Discord’s redemption was the entire season arc the way the magical box o’ rainbows was in season 4. I think in that case Discord’s redemption would have been more believable and even that Twilicorn would be far less hated as it involves a more satisfying pay off.
I freely admit that I am greatly biased on the subject of Discord. I am utterly horrified by mind control and similar tropes and therefor perceive Discord in a far darker light than a lot of people.
Seems to me you actually missed the whole point in Keep Calm and Flutter On. Fluttershy wasn’t being a “doormat” at all. She put the burner on when she needed to. At the same time, she was the only one, and always has been the only one, who has allowed Discord to simply be himself without criticism. In fact, she complimented him for making things “lively”. Fluttershy showed real depth of character in that episode, and that is what moved Discord. He experienced something with her he had never felt before, and he didn’t want it to end.
Fluttershy: Well, I mean, you could choose to be something a little nicer.
Discord: No, your words have convinced me Fluttershy. HEY TIREK, SOUP’S ON! It’s an all you can snarf magic buffet!
KCaFO suffers because the redemption arc is just too easy and it feels like Discord suddenly wanting a friend comes out of nowhere largely because there is no real chemistry between him and Fluttershy in the episode, just her being a doormat for his every insane whim.
To the show’s credit later episodes do build some chemistry between them.
