Though, simple games aren’t always that simple, and do have some depth. Take Tetris for example. Simple, yet complex at the same time.

I think what you mean is a fighting game that is accessible. SSB is a pretty accessible game, but it’s not exactly a simple game. As almost every fighting game has a learning curve even SSB. That’s why there are tournaments for it. To me a simple game is more of a game that has little to no strategy and thought and plays more like a nooby button masher. Another game series that is popular is Tekken due to its accessibility for beginners players but can still be complex enough for the higher level players.

Actually, alot of the SSB characters use actual martial arts moves. Even some like Fox McCloud’s A-button moves look like martial arts. Not to mention Kirby’s “Judo throw,” and such.
 
“Punch-Out” (love that game) is also a pretty simple fighting game, (but tough at times) though it oddly has some puzzle qualities, and rock-paper-scissors things to.

Also I forgot to mention that SSBs also has this to a smaller extent since the fighting games I mentioned uses martial arts unlike SSB where a lot of the characters are not martial artists which is why you don’t see SSB use limbs for its attacks. But it’s not like there ar fighting games that are simple like SSB since there are games like Playstaion all stars, Power Stone in some ways, and Ehrgeiz God Bless The Ring in some ways as well.

Well it’s not really random if you understand how the inputs work. Tekken uses a limb system for its inputs so it goes like this 1(left punch),2(right punch),3(left kick), and 4(right kick). The move Derpy is using if you look at the animation you can see (although I got it wrong it’s actually 4,3,4) she flys forward which is up/forward and does a right kick, left kick, right kick. So it’s more of looking at how you and your opponent use each limb for its movement and maneuvers. Which makes Tekkens inputs more realistic compared to the weak,medium,fierce like in Street Fighter/KOF, the Rock Paper Scissors inputs (punch, kick, and block) like in VF/DOA, and the high, mid, low stikes in Tobal, and Kakuto Chojin. So it’s pretty simple if you look at how derpy moves in this animation.
