Aside from being a li’l campy/kiddy, I don’t see what was so bad about the old Mario & Zelda cartoons. (Aside from how annoying Link was sometimes. “Excuuuuuse me, Princess!”)
One thing I loved about them, that no other game cartoon ever did was, they actually used sound-effects, and music from the games.
Also, Lou Albano was the best Mario voice IMO, and Harvey Atkin as Bowser Koopa was quite good to.
The cartoons were good though.
Well, not just the movie. Remember, there were also Super Mario Bros. and Zelda cartoons back in the day. And the CD-I games. Yeah, I can totally see why Nintendo would be reluctant to let others have creative control over their franchises. Makes me wonder how much they were involved with Hyrule Warriors or Pokken Tournament.
Moving on.
I’m aware of that, I think you misunderstood what I was talking about.
Though, Sega seems less restrictive with their properties then Nintendo is.
They did allow Bowser, and a super mushroom to cameo in “Wreck-it Ralph” though. (But it was said they were rather picky about things like how Bowser would sip his coffee, and such.)
@HighRollerHydra
That’s the opinion of the Nintendo Power writers/editors actually, not necessarily Nintendo themselves. (Though, sense the movie bombed, it’s likely that might be why Nintendo is reluctant to license movies, and such.) Ironic, considering when it first came out they kinda hyped the movie, but then later on made fun of it alot. (Like once remarking a “Balloon Fight” movie was being made starring Bob Hoskins.)
I can understand their reluctance with movies, (as their huge expensive projects) but it’s odd they haven’t allowed many cartoons, or comics of their series to be made.
I think I’d rather they allow a comic book personally then a movie. (Either done by Archie or IDW, as they’re the few comic companies that care about their licensed properties.)
Nintendo’s licensing department is confusing… They’ll allow crappy Super Mario Campbell’s soup to exist, but not a 4-issue comic mini-series… (I’d happy with just a 4-issue mini-series even, even if we don’t get a full series.)
After all, they have a manga Zelda series out now. (I even have a few of the translated ones.)
PS: The reason Poke’mon is so merchandise-heavy is because it’s made more-so by GameFreak/the Pokemon Company then Nintendo, so Nintendo doesn’t fully own said series, or have say-so over it’s merch’.
But the thing is, I think Nintendo’s constant down-putting of non-Pokémon movies could be because of negative memories of the SMB movie. They said “Yes, it actually happened, let us never speak of it again” in one Nintendo Power issue.
Well, that’s because Sonic is owned by Sega, not Nintendo.
Nintendo’s actually been quite notorious in recent years to constantly turn down offers to do cartoons, movies, and such based off their properties. They almost allowed a “Metroid” movie back in the early 2000s, (when the Metroid series made a come-back on the GameCube & GBA) but that was also axed.
Most recently, Nintendo of America turned down offers from Archie Comics to do a mini-series comic based off the Super Mario, Kirby, and Metroid games. (Which is a shame ‘cause they do a good job on the Sonic & Megaman comics. Plus some of the people who work on them including writer Ian Flynn are fans of the Nintendo games to, so they would’ve done a better job on them, then say people back in the ‘90s who never touched a game controller would.)
You can see a few sketches of Mario, Kirby, and Metroid characters (drawn by Tracey Yardley who does art for Sonic & Megaman) from the pitch here. I got to say he does the character pretty good. Love Mario’s badass face.
I can’t believe Nintendo turned them down, considering how well the Sonic & Megaman comics are doing under them. (Heck, they’re coming out with a THIRD Sonic comic series based on the “Sonic Boom” TV show soon.)
Well, I did hear that the studio that made the 2007 TMNT and 2009 Astro Boy movies approached Nintendo to make a CGI Legend of Zelda film. They even had footage as a test.
Nintendo said no, probably having heard the critics say nasty things about the aforementioned films.
@Step-chan
@Beau Skunky
As someone who’s a bit… obsessed with Christmas-themed movies and specials, I’m going to have to watch it sometime. At least I can be secure in the knowledge that it can’t be the worst Christmas video of all time.
Well, it’s not an “abomination,” but it’s quite boring.
@Beau Skunky
Not going through that link. Is it that bad?
True that.
That makes the Mario movie look like an Oscar-winner.
I’ve watched this before:

It’s not as long the Super Mario movie, but was much harder for me to make it through it.
Like I said, I took it out of context.
Let me fix that link for you. Though, Nintendo’s licensed plushes, toys, and even fruit snacks, and Cambells soup for awhile now, I doubt that means they’ll let Archie do a comic, or let anyone make a movie/TV show of their games anytime soon. Other then a few toys, and such Nintendo of America is notoriously stingy with their IPs.
Surprised they didn’t try to merchandise the Kirby anime much back when it aired. The F-Zero anime had cool toy racer vehicles in Japan made by Bandai, but they never came here, ‘cause the show didn’t last long in the states.
Shame ‘cause the F-Zero games need more love. (Loved those ever sense I got the first SNES one as a kid in all it’s Mode-7 graphics glory.)
Hey, I found this just recently, although I may have taken it out of context.

Well, Jim would be very annoying, so you might be right. ;) Though, Jim would cost a fortune to use.
@Jarkes
Yeah, I heard about that. They were even going to have the famous “Doom ships” from SMB3 in it, and a climatic showdown between Mario & Bowser (when he becomes his more monsterous form) over a bridge of lava.
@Jarkes
Not only that, Nintendo of America hasn’t even let anybody make anymore TV shows, comic books, or anything related to their characters to. (Aside from a few animes/manga in Japan, like the Kirby & F-Zero animes, and the Zelda manga.)
They’ve been notorious to turn down many requests to do a Zelda movie, and such.
Nintendo also turned down offers from Archie Comics to do a mini-series comic based on some of their series like Mario, Metroid, & Kirby. (You can see the pages & concept art Tracy Yardley drew for said pitch to Nintendo online.) Which is a shame, ’cause I think Archie does a good job on the Sonic & Megaman comics.
They almost caved-in and let somebody make a Metroid movie 10 years ago, but that was also eventually axed…
I’m betting the reason they didn’t use it is because a script closer to the games probably wouldn’t have worked in 1990’s live-action. It could probably work NOW, but Nintendo probably won’t let any companies near it after the film turned out to be a disaster.
If it was made in the 2000s, Jim Carrey would have made a great Waluigi
Supposedly, there’s an earlier script floating around that’s MUCH closer to the games, complete with power-ups and Koopa/Bowser saying “Your princess is in another castle!” (I would’ve loved to hear Dennis Hopper say that line)
Indeed, but some don’t understand that, and just lach onto what’s “popular opinion” unfortunately…
@Jarkes
I thought that was funny to. :P
(Well, they had to do something with all the unsold Super Scopes.)
@Jarkes
Really? That’s kinda funny. Poor Toad never got de-goomba’d at the end of the movie.
I would’ve liked a sequel with Richard Kiel playing Wario personally.
Despite the fact that the members of TGWTG repeatedly state that everyone has the right to their own opinion.
