I prefer: Rarity asks him to handle Sweetie while she’s busy or whatever, so they end up actually getting to know each other, and it rolls from there.

But that’s the only way this ship works out:

Spike has a crush on Rarity.
Sweetie Belle has a crush on Spike, mainly because Spike has a crush on Rarity.
Rarity doesn’t know whether to congratulate Spike for finding an age-appropriate friend or to murder Sweetie Belle for trying to steal her “little Spikey-wikey”.

As tired (and kinda creepy) as “Rarity rejects Spike so Sweetie and him get together”, I do really like the pairing itself. We’ll see if that’s what’s happening here.
