QueenChrysalis3

My list:
  1. Lord Tirek
  2. Discord
  3. King Sombra / Nightmare Moon
  4. King Sombra / Nightmare Moon
  5. Queen Chrysalis
    List ends there
Lord Tirek has the ability to steal other people’s magic to increase his own power and strength. Also, people say that without other people’s magic, he’s weak. Well, the state that we saw him in when he stole that unicorn’s magic might’ve looked very weak, but that was his weak state that Tartarus left him in. We don’t know what his normal state is.
Discord is a high level reality warper and can manipulate chaos energy. I think you know why he’s number 2.
Now, deciding between Nightmare Moon and King Sombra was hard since they both have a devastating amount of magic, both have a mist/cloud form and both manipulate some kind of dark or shadow magic.
Queen Chrysalis is number 5 because she could only beat Princess Celestia after sucking the love from Shining Armor. It is stated that at her normal power level, she is around as powerful as Twilight.

I never did truly understand how the power of the four princesses was equal to the power of Discord, 5 of the elements, and most of Equestria, when Discord himself always seemed so completely superior to the princesses. And if Discord isn’t really all that strong and just has abilities that make him unbeatable, then how did Tirek beat him?

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I’d say that Sombra and Tirek are the strongest, because the things that let the mane six win against them were mostly not in their control:

  • Sombra made sure to remove most pages talking about the Crystal Heart in the books and hid it to make sure anyone from outside wouldn’t know about it.

  • Tirek manipulated Discord into coming to his side, instead of acting like he was a enemy. When he saw the stained glass showing Twilight as a princess, he immediatly went to take care of her, he didn’t think “meh, another princess, I’m surely more powerful than her”. Once Twilight and her friends were left without any magic, he didn’t have any reason to think that the necklace he gave to Discord would be the thing that defeats him.

Using the Elements on NMM felt more like an act of mercy; a last resort before she’d have to be put down.

Not sure if Celestia would have considered that merciful… But she was losing the fight until she went for the Elements.

Forgive me, but when did Luna say she was confident of her chances alone? IIRC, all she asked was if Celestia didn’t also want her to go along with Twilight.

I could have phrased that better. I meant without Celestia, but with Shining and Cadance, who had already been sent. From context, it’s ambiguous whether Luna went to go instead of Twilight or in addition to her.

Either way, without Celestia.

Off the top of my head: the fact he was a solo unicorn and needed two alicorns to banish him; the terror he instills in everyone when not even at full power; the fact that Luna was uneasy sending proven heroes against him; and the fact that he’s the only villain who has needed to be straight up killed to end his threat.

Honestly? Most of that comes across as overly optimistic highball.

Keep in mind, we’ve seen crazy-powerful unicorns before. Shining Armor was capable of encasing an entire city in a forcefield, for extended periods of time. I’m honestly not sure if Celestia or Luna could punch through it on their own. Twilight, while not having a single big trick like her brother, has an absurd range of tricks, and can even learn unicorn magic from watching it a single time.

Sombra’s crystal control spell is fearsome, as long as he’s in the Crystal Empire, but he’s not on a plateau for power. He just happened to be able to get past Shining’s shield.

He instilled fear in the crystal ponies, who he’d enslaved in the past, so that’s… More reasonable than anything else. Luna was uneasy with not handling things herself, and frankly, having a person that had faced Sombra before go along would have been a better idea.

He was killed by the crystal ponies, and it’s uncertain whether the Crystal Heart had a capture setting at all, but Celestia and Luna were capable of sealing him away for a thousand years under their own power, so killing him wasn’t necessary to stop him, just the method used.

It’s true Sombra’s actual power-level was never officially shown, but the implications heavily imply he was crazy strong. All this serves to paint a pretty scary picture that neither NMM nor Chrysalis manage.

But it didn’t take the Elements of Harmony, and Luna was confident of her chances alone.

Sombra was probably the smartest of the villains so far, but he didn’t seem to have much power to back it up.

For all the crap Sombra gets nobody ever seems to remember how the Mane 6 were nearly defeated by security measures he built thousands of years ago.

To be honest, I think people focus on the MAIN ones more so than the minor ones which depresses me… (I love the both ranks the same) The reason why I love Ahuizotl, the Mane-iac, and the Diamond Dogs, (Well, seeing as they’re not greedy as their EQ Prime counterparts in Rainbow Rocks) is because they don’t need no God Power Level BS to take over everything.

I’ll give Ahuizotl alot more credit though, since the books are true, he’s proven to be a threat in Equestria. And the reason why Celestia and Luna don’t know him or rather knows him is because:

  1. He’s not that powerful to be noticeable.

  2. They know his existence, and hire Daring Do as a mercenary (If that’s the right way to say.)

That’s why I love Ahuizotl and the others(Exceptions of Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, and Iron Will; since those guys are not at all EVIL) it’s because of their unique attributes that the staff offers them.

So really, this whole we love this guy more, and not giving credits to other baddies who’s minor or big(ger) bad because of their uniqueness, is just pointless….
MildCard

Yeah, this poll reeks of favoritism. Sombra should be at least above Chrysalis (who was shocked herself when she beat Celestia) and probably NMM, too, since it took Luna and Celestia together to put him down the first time (and then an entire Empire the second time).

The beam with the combined colors of Celestia and Luna? Looked like they were using their powers together. It was blue, purple, white, and yellow, and it was coming from their horns, roughly.

It didn’t have the spread of colors used by the Elements of Harmony, nor was it coming from the Elements.

@DashVader
Very little was shown of the first defeat of Sombra. They might have used them, or the Elements might even just provide some sort of passive power to their bearers.

We know what it looks when the Elements are used. The beam that Celestia and Luna used on Sombra had their own colors, not the rainbow that the Elements creates. No implication of the Elements conferring passive abilities has been shown on the show, even when they’re present. Which they weren’t.

I don’t remember her saying that, though I could just be forgetting something. However, it’s not unreasonable that she would have absolutely no doubts about Twilight’s abilities.

Luna was not a fan of sending Twilight. She wanted to go herself.

and not only never implied that he should be left behind, but in fact wanted her to operate with help

Celestia outright told Twilight to work alone. If Twilight had obeyed Celestia’s order, like she wanted to, she would have failed against Sombra.

He clearly still had some control over the situation, as he managed to stay alive and bring the empire with him.

He managed to get a spell off, but he wasn’t sealed in the same place as the city, otherwise he would have been in the city when both emerged.

She has been shown to be defeated by beings who have absorbed a great deal of energy. The fact that Sombra incorporated being turned to shadow into his own arsenal of combat techniques suggests that he has such abilities,

I… What? Sombra was turned into shadow by Celestia and Luna. Even without going into the theory that it destroyed his mind, that’s not something that he had control over. He seemed to be stuck like that until the Crystal Heart healed him, actually. Shortly before the crystal ponies used it to blow him up.

He didn’t show any energy absorbing abilities at any point.

And Celestia showed an ability to project images out of one crystal.

One) That was specifically a crystal from the Crystal Empire. Two) Right after Celestia used it as a projector, she used Sombra’s crystal control trick to corrupt it, and then make it grow and spread.

So, Sombra was stuck in the shadow form, which couldn’t get past Cadence’s barrier like a mortal pony could, whereas Celestia was shown using his one big trick. If anyone had assimilated an ability…

I would assume they tried to conduct some sort of espionage/intelligence operations before invading.

Given that they went with plan hoof-to-rump rather than trying to find the Crystal Heart themselves, I don’t think that they had much intelligence.

In the present, Celestia outright said that even she didn’t know much about the place.

They sent her in with the dragon, and not only never implied that he should be left behind, but in fact wanted her to operate with help, which they understood Spike might force her to do.

She has been shown to be defeated by beings who have absorbed a great deal of energy. The fact that Sombra incorporated being turned to shadow into his own arsenal of combat techniques suggests that he has such abilities, and given the way the Crystal Heart works, he may have been absorbing energy from that as well. It would help explain how closely bonded he was with the empire until the heart was reinstalled. And Celestia showed an ability to project images out of one crystal. Trixie and Twilight both did similar things without crystals. It might even be a crystal specifically meant to project images, as such a thing would undoubtedly be of use in politics, and she apparently stored it in the throne room. It could be used as a magic slide projector. Or, if it is specifically for the Crystal Empire, it still only showed an ability to project a hologram. As such spells have been demonstrated without crystals in the past, it’s not unreasonable to assume that objects can be enchanted to work similarly, which would make them usable by earth ponies and pegasi. Why would an alicorn have such a thing? Well, as I mentioned earlier, it could be used in politics as a slide projector for any non-unicorn petitioners wishing to show such things. As for why she used it, that may just have been for effect, or perhaps her magic was occupied with other things(the sun goddess does have to, you know, control the sun).

I would assume they tried to conduct some sort of espionage/intelligence operations before invading. Even if they didn’t learn of those particular powers, they would likely have encountered them during the battle. Anti-magic devices are rather useful against magical beings.

You know, it’s odd that alot of people thinks they did.

Especially when the method they used on him was something the Elements would be expected to do.

Only worse.
