My current theory is that Discord is a manifestation of Starswirl’s evil nature that he purged from his body. Similar to the Kami and Piccolo situation.
The old headcanon about Discord being Star Swirl can be morphed into Discord being Star Swirl brother, after the regulatory body horror transformations, of course.
