They may have their views, they’ll just have to express them somewhere else.
Yeah, the main issue is when there’s a double standard; people complain about others opinions and try to make them shut up, but when others try to do the same to them, they complain that they’re being persecuted or whatever.
And just because you can say whatever you want doesn’t mean that there won’t be any consequences for it.
Exactly this. This is how free speech works. You can say whatever you want, but other people can say whatever they want, too, and that includes telling you to shut the fuck up.
Your rights aren’t being violated unless it’s the government telling you to be quiet.
That’s certainly true, but there’s a difference between “policing opinions” and “policing opinions so that users can hold onto the illusion that their opinion is the only one” are different.
Your post just made it sound like you stopped reading after the first sentence and took it at face value. The rest of the post makes it clear that it’s the intent behind the policing opinion that’s the problem. The post isn’t about people who try to keep a discussion on track by filtering out BS, it’s specifically about creating an echo chamber consisting entirely of people who refuse to acknowledge that others have differing views.
I know. But the truth is, we do the same thing all the time. If someone tried to argue that their race is genetically superior and that other races should be subservient to them, would you be willing to hold a discussion? Probably not.
“Policing and silencing” opinions is something that every community does. Nobody has an obligation to host the opinions that they collectively decide they don’t like.
You didn’t read the whole thing, did you? It’s mocking everybody who actually approaches discussions that way.
Uh, you do know how opinions work right? If you say things people don’t like, then of course they’re going to give you shit for it.
I’ve seen the exact same thing happen here more times than I care to count.
Opinions lead to people getting mad at each other. Getting mad leads to attempting to control the discussion. That’s how its always worked.
The only Tumblr blogs I ever pay attention to are the ones my favorite pony artists have. And Linkara. Linkara’s a cool dude.
I’m glad Tumblr exists. It’s a good thing. The internet is arguably better off for it.
I mean, all of this shit and drama, all of these attention whore teens and genuinely mentally ill people can congregate and spew vitriolic fucksauce from their faceholes, and I know exactly where not to go to avoid it all.
It’s containment. It’s not perfect, but people can give a label to these borderline (or not, as the case may be) psychopaths and sociopaths, the fools and the young idiots, those who latch onto these social justice fads and spout buzzowords for attention or affection.
People can say to me “it’s a Tumblr issue” and I will be prepared. I will know what to expect, and I can make the choice with a clear mind on wherever or not to proceed.
So thank you Tumblr. You austere, sellout, shittily formatted, psycho-magnet fucking disaster of a website.
Thank you.
Actually this has to do with the ongoing “Pony Mouthpiece” saga, in which tumblr neo-feminists are using images of ponies to broadcast brony (or men in general) hate and calling for the censorship (or in some cases assult/castration/murder) of anyone who disagrees with them.
And among others.
