Shining Armor did try to protect the princesses from Tirek, even though he was completely outclassed. It’s really the thought that counts, in that case.
Twilight doesn’t need bodyguarding, as she literally just fought Tirek to a standstill. Getting her own “bodyguard” would more be like a sign of her station, like Celestia and Luna and their guards. Probably to deal with the riff-raff while Twilight deals with the main threat. At most, he might be more physically-capable but rely on Twilight to handle magical-based threats (most of them). Just because you’re willing to accept the help of someone of the opposite gender doesn’t make you weaker than them, just able to delegate.
So it’s not okay for stallions to protect the mares they care about, but it’s okay for the stallions to be rendered useless time and time again so that the mares can save THEM?
Seriously, I can’t be the only one who’s bothered by this blatant double standard that the show has continually enforced in its efforts to have a strong female cast.

True. But I think spike didn’t mind not getting a hug from twilight but maybe in the season finale she might give him a hug hopefully.
Agreed, it would be nice to see Spike get someone new in his life who he could look up to and be close to, especially since Twilight didn’t hug him once this whole season. Poor kid.
It won’t happen but a lot of writers and artists should make flash sentry a father figure to that would be great.
I’m gonna need to see that in the show first. My guess is Flash is going to replace Spike as the male lead, and we’ll not see much of Spike in the new place. He’s just in the way of Twilight falling head over hooves for her Designated Crush.
