@Impossible9
Thanks for the detailed info man! I was hoping nobody with any experience would notice the bs topology i have going on at the moment tbh XD I’m just going for a static render in the end though so I havent been too worried about it(I never model anything that moves :/ )
As for the blueprints, I’m used to making scale models so it’s almost a reflex at this point… they were just a guide tho, ive started taking some artistic license at this point!
I may end up abandoning it before I finish, who knows, but its good practice anyway!

It’s actually shaping up better than my attempt at pone, but the topology is pretty messed up and it doesn’t follow the curves of the face.

Here’s what I mean, as an example on a human head:

Much of the same applies to any cartoon character such as ponies. You will find this especially once you start animating the face, you’ll need the edges to loop the way the face is going to deform, otherwise it will start looking really buggy really fast once it starts moving.

You might also want to fix the fact that there are way too many edge loops going through some places, like the middle of the back of her head.

Another problem I see is one I encountered at first too, and that is that you have a giant “balcony” below her eye. This is because you tried to match her eye to the front view exactly, but what you’ll find is that 2D drawings are not limited by space-time so they get to do that while you don’t. Because of this, 3D models will never look exactly like their 2D counterparts, there is always some spatial distortion. Make the eye rounder so the cheeks can fall into it smoothly instead of turning a sharp turn and going completely horizontal just so they can match the front view exactly.

Also, you might want to avoid blueprint modelling, as this is not too good a practice unless you need exact proportions, which is only the case in engineering or if you need high accuracy for some reason.

For decorative models, and for characters especially, what is important is that they make the same impression as the concept art. For this, you’ll have to look at the concept art and imagine the character in 3D space by yourself. This is an essential skill that you should cultivate if you plan to get good at modeling.

Anyway, I hope this helped.

@Joshua
it’s just a portrait…..for now…
I kind of want to get a feel for how this is gonna turn out before I do too much tbh! That being said, however, flanks are much simpler to model than faces lol

@Joshua
Right now just a static rendering of luna lol
I thought I’d take a break from the usual (in both art and from work) and do something different! I do a lot of 3D work but never any characters until now, so who better to start with, right?
I’m also attempting to find out if a realistic 3d rendering of a pony with show-accurate proportions will be creepy or not too XD (I’ll be using a good renderer and lighting rigs to eliminate that gmod look)
