He imagined he was a monster much more terrible than Zaraki himself was in his young Quincy mind - but his body couldn’t endure the transformation.  
Personally, I prefer the route Kubo took in this case, because I’m fed up with Zaraki’s God-Mode Sue shit. He’s fighting style is pretty boring, he just keeps cutting anything he sees in front of him and tanking much more damage than he should ever be able to, without wearing any sort of protection. Honestly, I hate those types of characters who rely exclusively on brute force, especially when the author insists on making him so strong as to vastly overshadow all the other characters who employ much better tactics and have much more interesting powers.  
So I was glad to see Gremmy being defeated by poetic justice instead of being cut in pieces like just another random mook, despite him having literally the most broken power in that universe.  
What’s most irritating about Zaraki is that, despite all the hype built upon him, on how his power is so immense that the other captains look positively insignificant in comparison, to the point they opted to sacrifice the best healer AND fighter in Soul Society, the only woman in Bleach who could ever hope to stand in the same grounds as the likes of Yamamoto and Aizen, just to make him unleash his true potential, which seems to keep growing and growing out of nowhere, we all know, in the end, it’s Ichigo who will bring an end to YHWach’s reign of terror in Soul Society. So, in the end, it won’t be nearly as much worth as most of us would ever wished to be.

Yeah, I feel the same.
 
It’s too bad, because despite all the hate he’s gotten (not that I can’t understand it or anything) but I actually thought Gremmy was an interesting character and enjoyed him quite a bit. I liked his design and personality, plus he had an interesting, if OP and often misused power. I also liked the small bits of development he went through as he fought Kenpachi. Sadly he fought Kenpachi, so he was destined to be offed in order to wank him (no offense to Kenpachi).
 
When I first saw the spoiler images for the latest chapter, I was super hyped because it looked like Gremmy was keeping his shit together and getting interesting with his attacks (Galaxy Room was totally sick), and I thought he was gonna go Vollstandig at first. But then I saw the last few pages and it just fell off a fucking cliff holy shit.
 
Bah, I’m done ranting, despite the fact that they’re getting jobbed left and right, the Stern Ritter and His Majesty are easily the most interesting parts of Bleach for me now. Well that, and the fact that despite not being a great writer, Kubo damn sure knows how to draw pretty pictures,

That’s Kubo for you, interesting characters ruined by mediocre writing and a hero would would get curb stomped by Yusuke Urameshi despite being ridiculously OP in-universe. In fact, if Bleach was written by someone more competent, we would have something that would deserve to be in the top three.

it was cool seeing zaraki’s sword finally, but either than that, getting killed by your own imagination is kind anti-climatic

Well, it’s kinda true. Both had some pretty anticlimatic endings.
