You can fall into a relationship purely by dumb luck and still not have a clue about how other people “work”. It doesn’t hurt to learn all one can. It helps to build a better, more productive relationship. I speak from experience. It was…rocky…for time, until I took time to learn about empathy and how to talk about problems in useful way.
 
There’s another fantastic book, called Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. Easy to read and useful stuff comes up right away. It’s basically pinpointing exactly when and how conversations are starting to go sour, and how to steer them back in the right direction, and shows you you and the other party can both get what you want. It also points out very common fallacies we all fall prey too, even without realizing it. It’s a book I’d recommend for every human being on earth, honestly.

I read HtWFaIP. The basic advice seemed to be “think about what other people want, and look for the win-win.” It’s perfectly good advice, if not universally applicable.
