I think they respawn without any memory of how they died. My guess is the reason that happens has to do with pinkie. I can see why pinkie would wind up becoming a completely remorseless and happy-go-lucky killer/torturer in such a situation. Kinda hard to care about the lives you take when they just end up coming back physically and mentally unscarred
