Well you may think that but to other, myself included, they give it more of an older mythical look, like something of old tails, so it’s not ugly at all.  
And the story behind the tale isn’t irrelevant, if you know of some of the folklore of nekomatas then it makes sense and is relevant.

“tufts of fur” don’t shot off the head at right angles and extend nearly the width of the face. Regardless of what they’re supposed to be though what they look like is a ridiculous looking second set of ears.
 
The back story band the tale is equally irrelevant to it’s looks, which with the dinky little spit at the end calls to mind nothing so much as a stereotypically drawn leek and looks goofy. Even full on twin tails would have been an improvement.
 
I also find the washed out purple coloration drab and uninteresting compared to the more striking black and yell of the other one, but that I’ll grant is more a matter of taste.

First off what “redundant ears” are you talking about, the tuffs of fur on the sides of it’s head?  
And the split tail is based off the nekomata of Japanese folklore, they are cat yokai that have a forked tail or two tails.

Seriously that purple one is out and out ugly with the redundant ears and dumb split tail. I kind of wonder if I’m missing some joke here since the black one is such a obviously cleaner and better design.
